Cheltenham Gold Cup preview

With the Cheltenham festival approaching fast, we take a look at the biggest race of the four days, analyse the main contenders and check out the best prices on offer with our sponsors Priced up bet.

Galopin des Champs
The reigning champ is now 11 wins from 16 starts over fences, and has enjoyed the perfect build up to retaining his title at Cheltenham. He is a throughly likeable and battle-hardened performer who
relishes every yard of this extended 3m2f trip, and looked as good as ever when landing the Irish Gold Cup for the third time at Leopardstown in February. That performance seems likely to scare off most
of the worthwhile opposition to him in the 2025 renewal of this race, and he is likely to start one of the shortest priced favourites in the Gold Cup’s long and prestigious history.
Odds: 1.50
Fact to File
Stabemate of the favourite who has been trounced twice by his old adversary already this winter, and the Ryanair seems a lot more suitable target for him (with the drop back in trip a big plus and more improvement to
come after just seven races so far over fences).
Odds: 7.00
Banbridge
Has now won 6 of his 11 career starts over fences, and surprised many with unknown reserves of stamina when winning the King George at Kempton over Christmas. Ideally wants good ground to be at his best, and
connections are liable to take the Ryanair route if the ground is on the softer side as usual at this meeting.
Odds: 9.00
Corbett’s Cross
Talented and trained by a genius in Emmet Mullins, but was beaten miles by Banbridge in the King George and would need to improve dramatically to trouble the principals. That being said, he has always had this race as
the aim all season, and remains open to plenty more improvement after just 8 runs over fences (and will not lack for stamina after winning the 3m5f NH Chase at the 2024 festival). Some each-way appeal at the current prices given
that the two ahead of him in the market may go elsewhere.
Odds: 15.00
Grangeclare West
Another Mullins rider, and he comes here on the back of a cracking effort behind Galopin des Champs at the DRF, but still suspect he was flattered there (six in contention coming to two out), and all of his other form leaves him
with loads to find.
Odds: 17.00
Montys Star
Henry de Bromhead has returned to form at the right time as the Festival looms, and his progressive stayer caught the eye when fourth at the DRF. He makes some each-way appeal with more to come after six runs over fences so far, and
might emerge as the clear Grand National favourite if he runs well in this Grade 1 prize.
Odds: 17.00
L’Homme Presse
Venetia Williams has enjoyed a terrific season and seems no sign of slowing down as the festival rapidly approaches. Her tough stayer has won 8 from 13 over fences, and returned to his very best when narrowly winning the Cotswold Chase here
in January. The bare form is a stone plus away from the favourites here, but he always gives his running at Cheltenham, jumps well for Charlie Deutsch, and makes plenty of each-way appeal at around the 20/1 mark.
