Cheltenham festival - Stayers hurdle preview

The 2025 Stayers Hurdle has been a very quiet ante-post market all winter, with the traditional trials in Britain and Ireland failing to produce any new superstars and the 2024 winner Teahupoo largely remaining in his stable for most of the season until trying to retain his crown back at Prestbury Park in March.

Teahupoo

Gordon Elliott’s prolific stayer landed hefty market confidence with ease when landing the 2024 Stayers hurdle, and is the clear form choice to retain his title this time around. He has only been seen out twice in the last year, winning at Punchestown in May 2024, and then running with credit behind
Lossiemouth in the Hattons Grace over 2m4f at Fairyhouse in December. He is reportedly in top condition at home, and no standout contender has emerged against him in all the usual trials this time around (in what has been a very weak division for the past few years in truth).

Home by the Lee

Joseph O’Brien’s scrapper is tough and battle-hardened, responding to pressure a long way out and almost always giving his running in these top staying contests. He has won only 5 from 19 over timber, but comes into this in rude health after game wins at Navan and Leopardstown, and is the
obvious each-way alternative to the short-priced favourite (beaten 6l in third in the 2024 renewal, running on steadily up the hill from well off the pace).

Lucky Place

Nicky Henderson’s unexposed hurdler has proved popular ante-post since his win at Cheltenham on New Years Day, landing the Grade 2 Relkeel hurdle from the consistent Gowel Road. He remains open to more improvement after just seven career starts over hurdles, ran really well over 2m5f at the 2024
festival when fourth of 21 in the Coral Cup, and is certainly the strongest of the UK challengers. However, stamina for this 3m trip is unproven, and he has plenty to find on the bare figures to trouble the high class favourite.

The Wallpark

Gordon Elliott’s second string is a very interesting runner, and looks decent value ew at around the 16/1 mark with Pricedupbet. He has won 6 from 12 over hurdles so far, improving run to run as his stamina has been drawn out, and caught the eye stepping up in class when fourth behind Crambo in the
Long Walk at Ascot in December (poorly placed and finished with running left in the tank). He is a bigger price than he should be because most judges have him pegged as a progressive handicapper, but this division is hardly the strongest and he represents different formlines altogether to the principals.

Rockys Diamond

Declan Queally has done really well with his progressive stayer, taking his form to another level when winning the Grade 2 Galmoy at Gowran in January on heavy ground. He is open to more after just six runs over hurdles, but might just be short of speed on the better ground at the festival and this will
be his first race away from Ireland.

Gowel Road

Cheltenham specialist who gives his running every time, finding gamely for pressure under positive rides from the top class Sam Twiston-Davies. He has only won 4 from 20 over hurdles in a long career, and usually finds a few too good when pitted against the best in this division.
