Cheltenham Festival - Champion hurdle preview

The 2025 Champion hurdle is sure to be one of the most eagerly anticipated races of the entire week, with Nicky Henderson’s superstar Constitution Hill looking to keep his unbeaten Rules record and land the prestigious Grade 1 prize. He has shortened up
to a prohibitively short price in recent weeks, with his work at home really impressing and the DRF raising more questions than answers about his rivals.

Constitution Hill
Nicky Henderson’s top class hurdler has had plenty of issues over the last couple of years, with colic keeping him off the track for several months and a disappointing Newbury gallop before his reappearance putting his future on the track in doubt. However, his
master trainer has got him back in rude health (32kg lighter for Kempton over Christmas compared with his workout a few weeks earlier), and he has barely come off the bridle to land the odds twice. His career record now stand at 10 wins from 10 runs, including the 2022
Supreme and 2023 Champion, and he is likely to be one of the bankers of the week for his legions of loyal followers. Whether a horse with his litany of issues represents a betting proposition at 4/7 is another matter, and he might drift on the day if Brighterdaysahead and
Lossiemouth both turn up to take him on.
Odds: 1.57
Brighterdaysahead
Gordon Elliott’s mare is now 7 from 8 over hurdles, with her only defeat coming at the hands of Golden Ace in the Grade 2 Ryanair mares novice at the 2024 festival (ridden with over confidence and just done for speed after the last). She emerged as a serious contender for this
race when routing the field by 30l at Leopardstown in December, with a below par State Man tailed off in third. The Mares hurdle would undoubtedly be an easier option (likely to be odds-on if taking up that entry), but the purists will hope she takes her chance
against Constitution Hill.
Odds: 5.00
Lossiemouth
Willie Mullins top class 6-y-o mare has won 9 of her 12 career starts over hurdles, but has eased significantly in the market after two defeats this winter. She was outpaced and hanging left on good ground at Kempton behind Constitution Hill, and then took a crashing fall at the sixth
behind State Man at the DRF. Apparently she has come out of that horrible experience fine, working well at home, and her facile 2024 victory in the Mares hurdle still remains fresh in the memory. A bit of soft ground and back at this track is certainly a big plus to her chance, and now
she has drifted she is well worth backing each-way NRNB at the current prices (does also have an entry in the Mares hurdle but Willie Mullins is adamant at the moment they will stick with plan a).
Odds: 8.00
State Man
A career record of 13 wins from 18 starts is testimony for this 8-y-o’s hardy nature, coming back weekend after weekend in Ireland to land valuable Graded contests against the same few horses. He landed the odds in 2024 in this race, but that really was one of the worst renewals in the
races history, and it will be quite a surprise if he his good enough to repeat the dose in 2025.
Odds: 11.00
Burdett Road
A completely diffferent formline to the principals can be a winning formula at Cheltenham, and James Owen is certainly a man to follow on the top table over the next few seasons. His progressive foregoing young hurdler goes with zest from the front and is sure to make sure this is a strongly run race, but he has
plenty to find on the figures and is likely to be a sitting duck up the final sapping climb to home.
Odds: 26.00
