Cheltenham Day 2 selections - Wednesday March 12th

THE NEW LION
1:20
Dan Skelton has made no secret of the regard in which he holds this strapping novice, and he has improved over hurdles this winter as his jumping has gained fluency. He is a smooth traveller with a smart turn of foot, and the fact he has come to this race rather than tackle the Supreme novice on Tuesday looks the right call. He is up against a very strong Irish team, but might just have too much speed for them as the ground continues dry out after a better spell of weather. There is plenty more improvement in the tank after just four career starts (winning his bumper and three hurdle starts with ease), and the yard continues in brilliant form in the the lead up to festival week (six winners in the last fortnight).
Odds: 3.00
DANCING CITY
2:00
Willie Mullins has enjoyed a typically prolific season with some fantastic young horses in the yard, and his exciting young chaser has really impressed with his jumping in winning both starts over fences so far. He seems sure to get a positive ride to utilise his cruising speed, and encouragingly showed he handled these undulating conditions when finishing a cracking third in the 2024 Albert Bartlett at the festival. Both of his two wins over fences this winter have come on pretty deep ground (landing the odds with ease at Punchestown and Naas), but he cruised round on good ground at the Punchestown festival last May, and these conditions should suit given how smoothly he travels.
Odds: 5.00
BE AWARE
2:40
Dan Skelton has a fantastic record in laying out horses to peak on the big day at the Cheltenham festival, and his unexposed handicapper seems sure to relish the demands of a huge field Coral Cup. He has run three cracking races in defeat since tackling handicap company, and showed this track held no fears when running Burdett Road very close in November last year.
Odds: 9.00
GALVIN
3:20
Gordon Elliott’s battle-hardened warrior has won 8 of his 22 career starts over fences, and has been trained all season with the big day in March in mind. His experience over these unique cross-country fences will be a real asset as ever and he can snap a losing run stretching back to October 2022 at Punchestown.
Odds: 7.00
JONBON
4:00
Nicky Henderson’s top class chaser has now won 12 of his 14 career starts over fences, and looked as good as ever when landing the Grade 1 Clarence House Chase at Ascot in January. He is usually a backable price as he only does just enough in front and seems to win with little to spare, and is likely to be one of the bankers of Wednesday afternoon under regular pilot Nico de Boinville. The drying spring ground should suit him (all of Henderson’s in general prefer a better surface than slogging through the mud), and he looks a class above these rivals in a sub-standard renewal of this fantastic race.
Odds: 1.83
AMERICAN MIKE
4:40
Gordon Elliott’s strong-traveller has let punters down on several occasions this winter, often finding less than seemed likely off the bridle having tanked through his races under restraint (usually heavily backed). He is undoubtedly very well treated if everything falls into place, and strongly run two miles in the Grand Annual could set things up ideally a late charge up the final climb to home. Luck in running always plays a part in this cavalry charge, but he has a touch of class and can swoop late with a clean run through from off what seems sure to be a very strong pace.
Odds: 15.00
GAMEOFINCHES
5:20
WIllie Mullins highly regarded youngster created a deep impression when landing hefty market confidence at Punchestown in February, barely off the bridle in a strong race to defeat some useful rivals on his Rules debut.
Odds: 5.00
