Cheltenham Day 1 selections - Tuesday March 11th

ROMEO COOLIO
1:20
Gordon Elliott has a typically strong hand in the novice division, and his battle-hardened performer has impressed in winning two of his three starts over hurdles so far. He is a sound jumper with a good attitude under pressure, and the increased emphasis on stamina up the Cheltenham hill should play to his strengths when the chips are down (with a positive ride on the cards). The short priced favourite Kopek Des Bordes really impressed at the DRF, but he is a freegoing sort and all speed, and this will be a very different test.
Odds: 7.00
MAJBOROUGH
2:00
Willie Mullins has always held his strapping novice in the highest regard at home, and he made a deeply impressive start to his chasing career and impressed landing hefty market confidence at the Dublin Racing festival (going with real zest from the front despite a few novicey jumping errors). The opposition has melted away in recent weeks, and he represents one of the bankers of the week for the legions of Irish punters who make the journey across. There is plenty more improvement in the tank after just two starts over fences, and the expected drying spring ground should see his high cruising speed from the front to maximum effect.
Odds: 1.57
BROADWAY BOY
2:40
Nigel Twiston-Davies ultra consistent chaser might be more exposed than some of these rivals, but he has plenty of vital Cheltenham experience in the book and will relish the emphasis on stamina that a strongly run Ultima seems sure to provide. He revels in good ground, jumps soundly and seems sure to be staying on strongly up the final climb to home under regular rider Sam Twiston-Davies.
Odds: 11.00
JULY FLOWER
3:20
Henry de Bromhead has returned to form after a quiet couple of months, and his progressive mare has now won 3 of her 9 career starts over hurdles. She impressed when coming from well off the pace to win a warm contest at Leopardstown in December on good ground (first start for the yard after arriving from France), and her relative freshness should be a real asset in a race that now has a wide open look to things.
Odds: 6.00
BRIGHTERDAYSAHEAD
4:00
Gordon Elliott’s mare is now 7 from 8 over hurdles, with her only defeat coming at the hands of Golden Ace in the Grade 2 Ryanair mares novice at the 2024 festival (ridden with over confidence and just done for speed after the last). She emerged as a serious contender for this race when routing the field by 30l at Leopardstown in December, with a below par State Man tailed off in third. The Mares hurdle would undoubtedly have been an easier option, but in what now appears to be a straight match for the Champion hurdle, she appeals as good value at around 2/1 against the odds-on favourite Constitution Hill.
Odds: 3.00
BEYOND YOUR DREAMS
4:40
This fiendishly competitive handicap has a typically wide open look to it in 2025, with numerous unexposed runners who are likely to have been primed to land a plot on the day. Joseph O’Brien’s ex-flat performer has reportedly been working very well at home, and certainly her winning hurdling form at Fairyhouse marks her down as potentially very well treated for a race of this type (with plenty of improvement in the tank after just three runs so far over timber).
Odds: 15.00
CAPTAIN CODY
5:20
Willie Mullins dual winning hurdler has been in pretty deep at big prices in warm company so far in this sphere, and his unexposed chaser has been in the notebook for this marathon test all winter. He is a smooth travelling sound jumper, and the demands of this 3m5f test should suit ideally if he can settle into a rhythm under a typically patient ride. There is loads more improvement to come upped in trip on just his fourth start over fences, and he was a huge eyecatcher when finishing strongly into third behind Three Card Brag at Navan last time out.
Odds: 8.00
