5 ante-post Cheltenham bets

With the Cheltenham festival looming large, we have taken a look at the ante-post markets and picked out five good value wagers across the four days of top class jumping.

ROMEO COOLIO

1.20 Tuesday 11th March ….. 1ptew (Supreme Novice)

Odds: 7.00

Gordon Elliott has a typically strong hand in the novice division, and his battle-hardened performer has impressed in winning two of his three starts over hurdles so far. He is a sound jumper with a good attitude under pressure, and the increased emphasis on stamina up the Cheltenham hill should play to his strengths when the chips are down (with a positive ride on the cards). The short priced favourite Kopek Des Bordes really impressed at the DRF, but he is a freegoing sort and all speed, and this will be a very different test.

2.40 Wednesday 12th March…..  1pt ew (Coral Cup handicap hurdle)

Odds: 13.00

Dan Skelton has a fantastic record in laying out horses to peak on the big day at the Cheltenham festival, and his unexposed handicapper seems sure to relish the demands of a huge field Coral Cup. He has run three cracking races in defeat since tackling handicap company, and showed this track held no fears when running Burdett Road very close in November last year.

5.20 Wednesday 12th March….. 1pt win (Champion bumper)

Odds: 7.00

The Champion bumper is always a fascinating race to watch to find future winners for next season over timber, but it can be a punting minefield (with the bookmakers certainly enjoying some fantastic shock results over the years). David Pipe’s 5-y-o looked a real star in the making when routing the field from the front at Ascot in December, and seems sure to get another attacking ride from the top class Jack Tudor. He is the standout contender of the UK runners, and nothing in Ireland has particularly stood out so far (for all the top yards are sure to be well represented as usual).

5.20 Thursday 13th March…..  1ptew (Kim Muir handicap chase)

Odds: 13.00

Jonjo O’Neill’s unexposed chaser went straight into the notebook for a festival handicap when finishing third behind the impressive The Jukebox Man at Newbury in November, and he has certainly been allotted a lenient looking opening mark. Jumping errors proved costly when he disappointed at Ascot in December, but that trip was far too short for him, and this 3m2f test should be a lot more suitable if he can put in a clean round of fencing.

1.20 Friday 14th March……  5pt win  (Triumph hurdle)

Odds: 3.00

Nicky Henderson has made no secret of the regard in which he holds this ex-french performer, and he showed exactly why when making a deeply impressive winning UK debut at Ascot in January. He looks head and shoulders above the UK opposition, and remains open to plenty more improvement after just two career starts so far (winner in Auteuil in October). His price has become much more attractive after the emergence of East India Dock for James Owen, but his latest rout from the front came against weak opposition and our selection is expected to prove a class above.
