What City Has Produced the Most World Cup Squad Players?
With 21 iterations of the World Cup behind us, there are some very interesting stats that one doesn’t notice at first glance. One of them is in regard to the city with the most participants in the competition.
With hundreds of players being a part of the tournament in the past, it is clear that some cities have produced more football talent than the rest. You might feel a sense of pride and joy if your home town is on the list. You might also hope that you yourself or that one of your close friends will one day make it as well.
Cities With the Most Participants
According to the data collected, there are three cities that emerge as the ones to be born in if you want to be part of your football national team’s final roster. The city that has produced the most players is Montevideo, Uruguay, with 95. La Celeste have played in 13 competitions so far, with the one in Qatar set to be their 14th. They have even managed to lift the trophy on two occasions, in 1930 and in 1950.
Mexico City takes second place, with 72 players born there. El Tri has featured in 16 competitions so far, with the most recent one being their 8th in a row. Mexico has never won a trophy, but they are one of the more consistent sides when it comes to qualifying for the final tournament.
The third place goes to the capital of Argentina, Buenos Aires, the city that has produced 66 participants so far. The Albicelestes are also one of the most consistent teams in the tournament, as they have qualified 18 times so far, making them the third most-efficient national team on the all-time list. They also have two championships to show for it, the first in 1978 and the second in 1986.
Cities with the Most World Cup Winners
Merely going to the competition is one thing, but things take a whole new spectrum after one lifts the trophy. With thousands of players participating, there have been only a few that have managed to win the trophy. When we take a look at the city with the most World Cup winners, we get a tie of two – Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo at five.
Brazil is the all-time leader in participation (22) and is the only national team that has played every tournament up to date. They are also the winningest team, with five trophies to their name. Selecao producing two cities with the most winners is quite an expected result.
Actually, Rio de Janeiro has produced two-time winners, the likes of Garrincha, Nilton, and Carlos Castilho. In comparison, São Paulo boasts Cafu and Djalma Santos as locals that have won the tournament two times as well.
Behind these two cities are Lanus (Argentina), Marseille (France), Munich (Germany), and Rome (Italy). All of them produced three competition winners apiece.
Countries With the Most Participants
In terms of player participation per country, the winner is someone you can probably guess on your own. Brazil has never missed a single competition, and we don’t see them missing any in the future. Brazil is often touted as the land of football and has so far produced 353 participants in the competition.
However, with 16 appearances, France probably takes a surprising second place. There have been 342 players from France playing in the final tournament. The third place goes to Germany with 303 players. It is something to be expected as Die Mannschaft have played in all but two competitions thus far.
