There’s a relegation clash set to take place in La Liga on Sunday afternoon and our expert Nathan Joyes has provided his Valencia vs Leganes Best Bet, team news, lineups and fixtures preview.

Although Valencia’s 7-1 defeat stole the headlines, Carlos Corberan’s team have beaten Celta Vigo and Real Sociedad either side of that result, helping them to edge slightly closer to Espanyol in 17th. However, more is required if they are to get out of their current position.

Leganes, on the other hand, have continued to defy the odds in recent weeks. Despite losing narrowly last time out against Rayo Vallecano, positive results against Athletic Bilbao and Atletico Madrid have kept them out of the bottom three.

Valencia vs Leganes Prediction: Visitors underestimated once more

Spain, La Liga, Sunday, February 9th, 15:15 (UK)

Valencia bounced back from their horror show against Barcelona to beat Celta Vigo 2-1 in front of their supporters last weekend. Not only was the reaction required, but so were the three points.

Espanyol’s shock win against Real Madrid kept Valencia four points off safety after 22 rounds, and Carlos Corberan knows his job isn’t going to be easy from now until May.

After failing to beat Rayo Vallecano, Alaves and Real Madrid, back-to-back wins against Real Sociedad and Celta Vigo at Estadio de Mestalla have shown there’s belief still in the team to turn their fortunes around.

Corberan knows his main hopes will be on the performances of Hugo Duro. Last season’s top goalscorer has seven to his name in 19 appearances this campaign, who scored the winner against Real Sociedad last month. However, he alone can’t save Valencia, and other players need to start contributing if Valencia can lift themselves out of the bottom three.

But having conceded the second most in La Liga (37), Valencia have issues at the other end of the pitch that they need to address first.

Leganes, who were strong relegation candidates at the start of the season, head to Valencia in good form. Unbeaten in their last seven away matches, as well as beating Barcelona on the road and Atletico Madrid at home, Borja Jimenez is working wonders at the club.

His preferred 4-5-1 formation makes Leganes incredibly difficult to break down, who recently kept back-to-back clean sheets against Bilbao and Atletico Madrid. It’s worked so well that they currently have the 11th best away record in La Liga, better than Sevilla and Getafe who sit above them in the table.

Able to frustrate teams and hit them on the counter is Jimenez’s way of thinking – and even if his team are fouled, they’ve proven dangerous from set pieces – just ask Barcelona.

Valencia’s front three/four in Corberan’s preferred 4-2-3-1 formation may well dominate the ball but struggle to break down a deep-lying Leganes defence/midfield. Leganes were doing such a great job against Rayo Vallecano last weekend until Sergio Gonzalez was sent off.

If they can keep 11 men on the pitch and adopt their usual away from home tactics, Valencia will struggle to create chances and their winning run at home can come to an end.

Valencia vs Leganes Injuries, Team News and Possible Lineups

Unless there are any midweek knocks in Valencia’s midweek clash against Barcelona in the Copa del Rey, Corberan should have a full squad to choose from. He will, however, want his team to put in a better performance than their recent 7-1 loss. A heavy defeat could weigh heavy heading into this clash.

As mentioned, Sergio Gonzalez was sent off against Rayo Vallecano last weekend and the 32-year-old will miss the trip to Valencia. Instead, Jorge Saenz is likely to be brought in, as he was the one substituted in place of forward Munir El-Haddadi at half-time to fill the gap.

Valencia possible starting lineup:
Mamardashvili; Gaya, Mosquera, Tarrega, Foulquier, Guerra, Barrenechea, Lopez, Almeida, Rioja, Duro

Leganes possible starting lineup:
Dmitrovic; Cruz, Nastasic, Rosier, Saenz, Altimira, Raba, Cisse, Neyou, Rodriguez, El-Haddadi
