In connection with the start of the Women’s EURO 2022 Tournament, bettingexpert.com has collected the numbers of social media followers of all the players and teams to determine who is the most popular & how is the popularity of the players going to grow throughout the tournament.
We're looking at social media for this. As women's football grows, so does the popularity of certain big-name players across social media. We compared the Instagram follower amounts of over 360 of the players taking part in the European Championships this summer.
As of today, the top 5 most followed players on Instagram are: Lieke Martens (Netherlands, 1.35 million followers), Ada Hegerberg (Norway, 734 thousand followers), Barbara Bonansea (Italy, 613 thousand followers), Sakina Karchaoui (France, 572 thousand followers), Daniëlle van de Donk (Netherlands, 557 thousand followers).
The most followed teams when all followers of the players are added up are: Netherlands (3.8 million followers), England (3.4 million followers), Spain (2.68 million followers), Italy (1.97 million followers), France (1.92 million followers).
Lieke Martens brings a good portion of the Netherlands' following with her social media pull. The attacker joined Paris Saint-Germain this summer after several successful seasons at FC Barcelona. Her social media following will only grow in Paris. Five of the top 10 players with the biggest followings come from the Netherlands. It's no surprise to see them top the list for nations.
England take up second place despite only having one player in the top 10. Captain Leah Williamson has the biggest following of the Lionesses with almost 350 thousand Instagram followers to her name. Lucy Bronze, Fran Kirby and Alex Greenwood all boast a strong following for England.
Finland are one of the lowest-ranked teams in the tournament and they're at the bottom of this particular table. Over a third of the entire team's total social media following comes through midfielder Nora Heroum. The former-Brighton player now plays in Italy with Lazio.
In total, all of the players have 21.37 million followers.
