Talleres vs River Plate Prediction 1: A point apiece
Argentina, Copa Libertadores, Thursday, August 15th, 01:30 (UK)
River picked up 16 points from the six group matches as they breezed into the knockout stage. However, it’s been all change since then, as Martin Demichelis has left as head coach and Marcelo Gallardo has made a shock return to the club.
Their greatest ever manager will surely reignite what has been lost in recent times, but this in itself will take time to implement. His presence around the place will do wonders for morale, but translating that onto the pitch may not happen in his first few matches.
Talleres will head into this fixture without their star player Ramon Sosa. Pictured training alone while the club worked on his potential sale to Nottingham Forest, they’ve lost their main outlet, which explains the recent run of draws.
Let’s not forget this is the first leg. There’s no need for River to go chasing a result with the match set to be decided at El Monumental in a week’s time.
After sharing a 2-2 entertaining draw back in March, it might not be as exciting, but the draw definitely stands out.
- Talleres vs River Plate Prediction 1: Draw
- Best Odds: 3.050
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 6/10
Talleres vs River Plate Prediction 2: Goals catch the eye
Just because the game might end as it started, that doesn’t mean we won’t see goals at either end.
It’s fair to say River’s group stage couldn’t have been any easier and this will be their toughest test in the competition to date.
Admittedly, Talleres have lost their cutting edge with Sosa sitting out, but forward Bruno Barticciotto has been in and amongst the goals domestically this campaign. The 23-year-old may be trusted to lead the line having come off the bench to score against Instituto last weekend.
Colombian midfielder Juan Portilla has weighed in with four goal contributions in the league, and he too is set to play a key role in the heart of the midfield.
It’s up to Talleres to at least score with a trip to El Monumental not looking the easiest of tasks. Yet with Gallardo back in the dugout, expect a more fluid front line with 16-year-old Franco Mastantuono taking a prominent role.
Goals haven’t been too much of an issue in recent weeks for River, but expect a new lease of life under their old/new head coach.
- Talleres vs River Plate Prediction 2: BTTS Yes
- Best Odds: 2.10
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 6/10
Talleres vs River Plate Prediction 3: Colombian could be key
Miguel Borja is highly likely to lead the line and he’s someone who Gallardo trusts. Having scored five goals in six Libertadores appearances already, the Colombian has remained a key part of the team since the sale of Lucas Beltran to Fiorentina.
Gallardo may keep us guessing, but it’s predicted he will play a 4-5-1 formation, with Borja operating as the lone striker. With Mastantuono directly behind, and with the likes of Manuel Lanzini and Pablo Solari operating on either flank, Borja won’t be short of chances.
The Colombian is also River’s dedicated penalty taker when on the pitch, and so if Mastantuono wriggles through Talleres’ defence and is brought down, Gallardo can rely on Borja to deliver from the spot.
Despite up and down performances from the vast majority of the squad, Borja has been rather consistent and will want to impress his new coach to keep the no.9 spot.
- Talleres vs River Plate Prediction 3: Miguel Borja anytime goalscorer
- Best Odds:2.05
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 5/10
