San Lorenzo vs Palmeiras Prediction: Team News and Lineups Preview
Jhohan Romana of San Lorenzo seen in action during the match between San Lorenzo vs Estudiantes

The 2024 Copa Libertadores group stage returns and so has our South American expert Nathan Joyes who’s on hand to provide his San Lorenzo vs Palmeiras prediction, team news, lineups and fixtures preview.

The two sides haven’t met since 2019, when both teams managed to sneak a 1-0 victory when at home. If we had to put our neck on the line for a result, it’d be for Palmeiras to win the match 0-1.

San Lorenzo vs Palmeiras Prediction 1: Tight tussle in Argentina

Argentina, Copa Libertadores, Thursday, April 4th, 01:30 (UK)

San Lorenzo returns to the Libertadores group stage after a four-year absence, but there’s plenty to like about the Argentine outfit, which has started life strongly domestically.

Coming into their biggest test of the season, they’ve won their last four home matches to nil, with Facundo Altamirano impressing in between the sticks.

Jhohan Romana has come in at centre-back from MLS outfit Austin and has tightened their defence tremendously since his arrival.

Palmeiras are one of the strongest teams in the competition and as a result, are one of the favourites to lift the trophy in November. San Lorenzo will know any points gained against the Brazilians will help see them through to the next round.

However, they certainly won’t want to start with a defeat, and a more conservative approach is expected from both sides.

Palmeiras have been excellent in the Paulista this season, and have reached the final, and have only conceded twice in their last five.

Both these teams might just cancel each other out, and so there’s plenty of juice for both not to find the back of the net.

San Lorenzo vs Palmeiras Prediction 2: Value with the half-time draw

Although San Lorenzo’s home form has been mightily impressive, they’ve only just edged past teams by a single-goal margin. Palmeiras will present an entirely different challenge for the hosts, who will have to be wary of their young, attacking superstars.

Most likely, Endrick will lead the line, and if you believe Palmeiras can sneak a victory, it’s worth backing the Real Madrid-bound striker to score anytime at 3.25.

However, with Palmeiras proving deadly on the counter-attack, it’s likely San Lorenzo will look to size up their opponents in the opening round. The visitors won’t be one to go all-out attack either, knowing a defeat to kickstart proceedings can make life difficult for themselves.

Palmeiras also have the second leg of the Paulista final to worry about, and with plenty of games coming thick and fast, it’s unlikely they’ll be looking to turn up and dominate from the first whistle – especially against a solid opponent.

With a low scoring match anticipated, and with under 2.5 goals priced around 1.55, it’s worth backing a price with more meat. A narrow victory may be achieved by the visitors, but expect a chess-like opening 45 minutes.

  • San Lorenzo vs Palmeiras Prediction 2: Half Time Result – Draw
  • Best Odds: 2.00
  • Bookmaker: bet365
  • Stake: 6/10

San Lorenzo vs Palmeiras Prediction 3: Visitors to cling on

Both of these sides met each other in the 2019 group stage, where they both landed a 1-0 victory on home soil. However, on both occasions, it took until the second half for either team to be broken down.

A lot has changed since those matches, but San Lorenzo have shown defensive qualities in 2024 which have been lacking for a while. Palmeiras are experienced competitors in the Libertadores, who only lost once on the road in 2023 on their way to the semi-final.

Their away loss in the competition came against Bolivar, and for those of you who read my columns, know they play at extreme altitude and Palmeiras largely fielded a reverse side for that fixture.

Palmeiras recruited defensive midfielder Anibal Moreno from Racing during the off-season, and he’s almost the missing piece in order to protect their defence. With plenty of depth and experience within their ranks, San Lorenzo will struggle to break the Brazilians down.

  • San Lorenzo vs Palmeiras Prediction 3: Palmeiras Double Chance and Under 2.5 Goals
  • Best Odds: 2.05
  • Bookmaker: bet365
  • Stake: 6/10

San Lorenzo vs Palmeiras Team News and Possible Lineups: All eyes on Endrick

Palmeiras’ young wonderkid is off to La Liga on July 1st but the Brazilian international has time to put his team into the knockout stages of the Libertadores before he leaves. Palmeiras may have an ideal replacement in Flaco Lopez for this level of football, but there’s no doubt Endrick will leave a hole when he leaves. Expect the youngster to lead the line for the visitors.

San Lorenzo also have no major issues coming into this match, who will likely line up with their favoured 3-5-2 formation and remain compact when out of possession. Both sides are capable of qualifying, which is why a draw is a real possibility in the first round.

San Lorenzo possible starting lineup: Altamirano; Braida, Campi, Romana, Lujan, Giay, Irala, Insaurralde, Barrios, Ferreira, Herazo

Palmeiras possible starting lineup: Weverton; Joaquin Piquerez, Murilo, Luan, Marcos Rocha, Mayke, Ze Rafael, Moreno, Raphael Veiga, Endrick, Lopez

Match Stats: Chess match anticipated in Argentina

  • San Lorenzo won their previous head-to-head meeting at home to Palmeiras 1-0 in 2019.
  • San Lorenzo has won their last four home matches to nil and under 2.5 match goals.
  • Palmeiras lost the first leg of the Paulista final 1-0 to Santos before heading into this fixture.
