Roma vs Atalanta Tip 1: home form is keeping Mou afloat
Italy, Serie A, Sunday, January 7th, 19:45 (UK)
Last Saturday against Juventus, Roma collected their 10th away defeat of 2023.
‘Here we go again’ the Giallorossi fans must have thought as the game followed a script that repeats itself every time Josè Mourinho’s men face a top Italian side away from the Olimpico.
Roma huffed and puffed and even created a couple of good chances in the first half but capitulated at the first individual mistake. After falling behind, they simply crashed into Juve’s wall, and despite Mou’s substitutions (Roma finished the game with four strikers on the pitch), they could not break down the Bianconeri.
Paulo Dybala went close in the first half, but his partner in attack, Romelu Lukaku, failed to register a single shot on target.
Since Mou has been in charge, Roma have won only six of the 17 games they played against top-7 opposition: too little for a club that is aiming to return to the Champions League after six years’ absence.
But when Roma play at the Olimpico, everything changes. The environment galvanises them, scoring in their last 22 games in all competitions.
They failed to score this season against Inter, Lazio, Bologna, and Juve (all away games), but they have also kept 15 home clean sheets in 2023 in all competitions.

Roma vs Atalanta Tip 2: ‘Look’ out for a key absentee
On the other hand, Atalanta’s away form has been very patchy: they’ve already lost five Serie A games (against Frosinone, Fiorentina, Lazio, Torino and Bologna), keeping clean sheets only at Empoli and Verona.
With their 13 goals conceded, the Orobici are in the bottom half in terms of defensive record.
Since November, Giampiero Gasperini’s side has only won three Serie A games, all at home, and will travel to the capital without their main man, Ademola Lookman (seven goals so far), who’s been called up by Nigeria for the AFCON.
Perhaps don’t read too much into the two most recent score lines: Atalanta created a lot in their 1-0 defeat to Bologna but also risked on more than one occasion to concede against Lecce last Saturday.
Stats suggest both sides could score at least once, and for the visitors, the Dutch international Teun Koopmeiners might be the one to watch.
Due to Lookman’s absence, he’ll play in a slightly forward position than usual and could get into shooting areas, thanks also to Gianluca Scamacca’s work at holding the ball and keeping Roma’s defenders busy.
Koopmeiners has scored three goals (at the end of last season, his tally was 10) so far and has had at least a shot in all of Atalanta’s last five games.

Roma vs Atalanta Tip 3: Paulo to shine again at the Olimpico
‘La Joya’ looked sharp last Saturday as he returned to the pitch after a couple of weeks out due to a muscular injury.
His position on Roma’s right-hand side, between Bove and the advancing full-back Kristensen, made the Argentine challenging to pick up for the Juventus defence as Dybala was often able to link up the play (he had two shots and four passes that led to a shot).
It’s well-known how much Roma relies on him to add spark and creativity to a forward line that has been more prolific compared to a year ago (plus seven goals scored), but that sometimes comes unstuck against top sides.
This season, the Giallorossi have only lost one of their last seven games when the former Juventus man played from the first minute.
Since last year, he has missed 22 games due to injuries, but when he featured, he has often left his mark: 36 goals involvement (22 goals, 14 assists) in 53 games with Roma.
The Olimpico will be again a sold-out, and Dybala loves playing there: 16 of his goals since August 2022 have come in front of the home crowd (he also netted five goals in Rome, against Roma and Lazio, when he played for Palermo and Juventus).
- Roma vs Atalanta Tip 3: Paulo Dybala Anytime Goalscorer (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 3.50

5/10
Roma vs Atalanta Team News Preview: AFCON affecting both sides
Both Ademola Lookman for Atalanta and Evan N’Dicka for the hosts will miss the game due to their involvement in the Africa Cup Of Nations.
Captain Lorenzo Pellegrini, who has been on the bench for Roma’s last two games, will play in midfield, with Bryan Cristante (former Atalanta player) slotting in at centre-back.
For the visitors, Gianluca Scamacca will act as the lone striker, with De Keteleare and Koopmeiners behind. De Roon will return in the middle of the park in place of Pasalic. The only doubt for Gianpiero Scaperini is the involvement of defender Scalvini from the start.
Smalling, Aouar, Abraham, Palomino, Toloi and Hateboer are all out.
