Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi during the pre-season friendly match at the University of Bradford Stadium

As Olympique Marseille embarks on the 2024/25 Ligue 1 season, all eyes are on their new manager, Roberto De Zerbi.

Known for his innovative approach and transformative impact on clubs, De Zerbi’s arrival at Marseille signals a period of substantial change and renewed ambition.

After a disappointing eighth-place finish in the league last season, coupled with a semi-final exit from the Europa League, the club’s hierarchy, led by President Pablo Longoria, has set out to overhaul the squad and challenge the dominance of Paris Saint-Germain.

Our European football expert, Daniele Fisichella, has assessed OM’s chances in Ligue 1 and the French Cup.

Strategic Overhaul and Key Signings

France, Ligue 1

Roberto De Zerbi’s tenure at Marseille has already seen a significant reshaping of the squad. The Italian coach, renowned for his success at Brighton & Hove Albion, Shakhtar Donetsk, and Sassuolo, has inherited a team in transition, with several high-profile departures and notable arrivals.

One of the most impactful signings is Mason Greenwood, who was acquired from Manchester United for a substantial fee of €31 million. The English winger, who has joined Marseille on a permanent deal, has been handed the coveted number 10 shirt. His addition promises to enhance the attacking prowess of the team, bringing creativity and goal-scoring ability to the front line. Despite the controversy surrounding Greenwood’s past, his footballing talent is undeniable and could be pivotal for Marseille’s ambitions this season.

In defence, Marseille has bolstered their backline with the acquisition of Lilian Brassier from Brest. The central defender, known for his solidity and potential, arrives on loan with a future option to buy, strengthening a defence that was often criticised last season. Additionally, the club is set to welcome Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Tottenham Hotspur, a player with a wealth of Premier League experience and a reputation for his combative presence.

Ismael Koné, another midfield addition from Watford, further complements this overhaul. The Canadian international, who impressed in the Championship, adds depth and versatility to Marseille’s midfield.

The search for a new goalkeeper is ongoing, with Brice Samba from Lens emerging as a potential target. The departure of Pau Lopez to Como has left a void that Marseille is keen to fill before the season kicks off.

Offensive Revamp and Tactical Adjustments

France, Ligue 1, 16 August 2024 – 17 May 2025

Marseille’s attack is undergoing a significant transformation, with notable exits and high-profile targets making headlines. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s departure to Al-Qadsiah and Joaquin Correa’s return to Inter have left gaps that De Zerbi is keen to address.

The potential arrival of Eddie Nketiah from Arsenal is a key focus. The young English striker, who has struggled for consistent game time at Arsenal, could find a new lease on life in Ligue 1 and provide Marseille with a dynamic attacking option.

The departure of Ismaila Sarr to Crystal Palace could also impact Marseille’s attack. Sarr, who contributed five goals in 35 appearances last season, has attracted interest from the Premier League, with Crystal Palace reportedly close to securing his services. If the deal goes through, it would further emphasise the club’s willingness to revamp their squad in pursuit of a more competitive edge.

De Zerbi’s Vision and OM’s Ambitions

France, French Cup, 14 September 2023 – 14 May 2025

Roberto De Zerbi’s appointment comes with high expectations. The Italian coach has previously demonstrated his ability to elevate clubs and achieve impressive results. At Brighton, he led the team to their highest-ever Premier League finish and a historic European qualification. His tactical acumen and emphasis on fluid, attacking football are anticipated to rejuvenate Marseille and restore its competitive edge.

De Zerbi’s admiration for Marseille’s passionate fan base and storied history is evident. He has openly expressed his fascination with the club, citing legends like Chris Waddle and Rudi Völler as sources of inspiration. His commitment to bringing success to Marseille is clear, and he has emphasised the need to make the fans proud and compete vigorously in Ligue 1.

However, the challenges are considerable. Marseille has undergone frequent managerial changes in recent years, and De Zerbi’s success will depend on his ability to integrate his philosophy with the existing squad and navigate the pressures of Ligue 1.

Last season, the team underperformed based on expected goals (xG) (+8.03, the third-highest value in the league’s top 10) and, based on xG values, should have finished second, only five points behind PSG. Further proof, alongside notable wins in the Europa League against Villarreal and Benfica, is that OM has a very talented squad which, on its day, can perform at a very high level.

Competing against a dominant PSG, who have clinched ten league titles in twelve years, will be no easy feat. However, if there is a time when the Parisians will be most vulnerable, it will be this season, after they lost their star man, Kylian Mbappé.

Teams like AS Monaco, Lille and Stade Brestois 29 will all feel they might have a serious chance to win the title.  But with a well-balanced squad and strategic reinforcements, Marseille has the potential to challenge for the top spots.
