Monaco vs Rennes Prediction: Team News and Lineups Preview
Welcome to our Monaco vs Rennes prediction, team news, lineups and fixtures preview over in Ligue 1. Monaco were in imperious form last week as they thrashed Metz 5-2. They continue their quest to finish in a Champions League position and be ‘best of the rest’ behind PSG.
Monaco hosts Rennes on the south coast of France for what promises to be an exciting affair. French expert Steve Wyss previews the game in full.

Monaco vs Rennes Prediction 1: Good time for Monaco to face Rennes
France, Ligue 1, Sunday 7th April, 16:05 (UK)
Monaco are still a team I have question marks about, but they continue to have decent fixture schedules and regularly get teams at a good time. That is because they had no European football to worry about this season and got eliminated from the Coupe de France early. The end result is that they currently sit third in the Ligue 1 table and are probably favourites to end the year as runner-up. Their form has been mixed recently, and it is a concern that Les Monegasques have failed to win any of their last six home games, but there’s no doubt they deserve to be favourites here.
At the time of writing, we don’t know the result of the French Cup semi-final between PSG and Rennes. That game could make or break Rennes’ season and they will have given it absolutely everything to try and make the final. There is the possibility of a hangover from that game and certainly a physical disadvantage, which Monaco could exploit. The timing of this game is perfect for the home team and so I think they are worth backing on a -0.75 Asian Handicap. Once again, I do not fully trust this team, but they are normally good enough to make the most of a favourable fixture list this term.
- Monaco vs Rennes Prediction 1: Monaco -0.75 Asian Handicap (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 2.06

Monaco vs Rennes Prediction 2: Goals likely to flow in the principality
This match just screams goals and should be very entertaining. Monaco have registered the most over 2.5 goal fixtures in Ligue 1 this season, with 18 out of 27 games containing at least three goals and 12 of those going on to convert the over 3.5 goal line. Manager Afi Hutter has brought a swashbuckling style of football to the south coast, and Monaco pack a decent firing punch. Their 52 goals scored is only toppled by PSG but they have less defensive control than the Parisians.
Rennes are likely to come here with an attacking game plan. They could be tired after a tough midweek cup match, leading to mistakes and issues on the field. Manager Julien Stephan must play to his strengths, which is very much in the final third of the field. They were involved in a similar fixture facing top-four opponents a few weeks ago and drew 2-2 vs Lille. On that occasion, they came under significant pressure in the second half and blew a 2-0 lead. Styles make matches, and this feels like a potential open encounter in which both sides just take shots at each other. This is one of those H2Hs that has a history of goals and BTTS – Yes. These two clubs aren’t rivals as such, but are often at each other’s throats. Taking the Over 3 Asian goal line is usually a sensible bet involving Monaco fixtures and should generate at least a push.
- Monaco vs Rennes Prediction 2: Over 3 Asian Goals (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 1.99
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 9/10
Monaco vs Rennes Prediction 3: Balogun to keep firing after last week’s brace
As always with any goal scorer, tick the void button if your player doesn’t start. That definitely applies here because the starting XI is difficult to predict, and there are several different options available to both teams. Wissam Ben Yedder is the bookmaker’s favourite to score anytime, but I think Folarin Balogun could be worth backing at a bigger price. It was noticeable that he came off the bench to grab a brace vs Metz in last week’s encounter, and maybe he can gain some confidence from that.
Adi Hutter might prefer to use him as a bench weapon, but with Ben Yedder firing blanks, then maybe the former Reims man will get a spot in the lineup. He has now scored seven goals this season and will get nowhere near the 21 tally he fired in the previous campaign. Some injuries and inconsistent game time have not helped him this season and he could do with finishing the year on a more stable footing. In a game where I like a lot of goals to be scored, taking Balogun to hit the back of the net at 2.40 looks a decent enough price. There’s a chance this could be a void bet, but there’s enough of an appeal, which is tempting enough.
- Monaco vs Rennes Prediction 3: Folarin Balogun to Score Anytime (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 2.40
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 6/10

Monaco vs Rennes Team News and Possible Lineups: Zakaria and Blas back from suspension
The Renes XI is difficult to predict because at the time of writing we don’t know the result or any other outcomes from the midweek French cup semi final vs PSG. They are likely to line up in a 4 -4-2 system. Ludovic Blas returns from suspension.
Dennis Zakaria could return from suspension for Monaco but Mohamed Camara is an injury doubt. Balogun is pushing for a place in the side after scoring a brace last week.
Monaco possible starting lineup: Majecki, Jakobs, Kehrer, Singo, Vanderson, Golovin, Fofana, Balogun, Ben Yedder, Zakaria, Minamino
Rennes possible starting lineup: Mandanda, Theate, Wooh, Omari, G Doue, Blas, Matusiwa, Santamaria, Bourigeaud, Gouiri, Terrier
