Mikael Silvestre urges ten Hag to give Amad Diallo a chance

Mikael Silvestre urges ten Hag to give Amad Diallo a chance
Premier League Nottingham Forest v Manchester United, ManU Erik ten Hag Manager of Manchester United arrives ahead of the Premier League match Nottingham Forest vs Manchester United at City Ground, Nottingham, United Kingdom, 30th December 2023

Former Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre discusses the form of Antony out on the right wing with Devang Prasad, and urges Erik ten Hag to give Diallo a chance to prove himself.

The former Rangers and Sunderland loanee, who came alive in the Championship last term, could provide the spark that Manchester United so desperately need in the Premier League right now.

Should Amad Diallo be given a chance?

Antony isn’t the only United attacker struggling

The form of Manchester United’s £82m signing Antony has been a huge cause for concern amongst United fans for quite some now. The Brazilian has scored just eight times in 65 games, providing three assists along the way, leading many to question the transfer fee paid for him.

It was recently reported that Manchester United initially valued the winger at £25m. Yet somehow have ended up paying over triple the price. Whilst Silvestre would like to see more from Antony, he argues that none of the Manchester United forwards are impressing as things stand. Seemingly, he feels as though there’s much work to be done with improving the connection between the attacking unit on the training ground.

“Right now, no attacking players for Man United are shining, so I think it’s more about the collective than individuals. But for Antony, I think he is really trying but maybe the connection with the other players could be a bit better at times.”

“He is trying to get things right and create more chances for the team.”

Ten Hag must give Amad a chance

Within the United fan base, there has been a growing desire and call for Amad Diallo to be granted an opportunity to establish himself in the United first team. This sentiment has been fueled by Diallo’s impressive loan spell at Sunderland last season, where he became a fan favourite by contributing 14 goals and 4 assists. The question arises: Should someone like Amad Diallo be provided with a chance to make the right side of the team his position?

Mikael Silvestre firmly believes that Diallo deserves a chance to showcase his talents and prove his worth at some point.

“We haven’t seen Amad Diallo enough to judge him but he needs to be given the chance at some point, maybe after Christmas when there are a lot of games.”

“We know he is talented but playing for Man United on a regular basis is difficult.”

Silvestre backs ten Hag despite poor season

On Christmas Eve, United and Ratcliffe jointly announced that the British billionaire had reached an agreement to acquire a minority stake in the club, amounting to £1.3 billion, following 13 months of negotiations. In the wake of Manchester United’s struggles, current manager Erik ten Hag is reportedly at risk of being sacked, and Graham Potter is rumoured to be at the top of Manchester United’s list as a potential replacement.

United’s performance has fallen far below the standards they had set in the previous season, as evidenced by their 14th loss in all competitions this season, a 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest at the City Ground. The question that arises is whether Graham Potter is the right person to guide Manchester United back in the right direction.

“I think it is too premature to talk about other managers for the job because Erik ten Hag is not under extreme pressure at the moment.”

“He was given a long contract to rebuild and it’s only been 18 months into the job. He’s still fresh.”

“So it’s too early to speak about options.”

McTominay is a short term solution

Amongst United fans, one of the most pressing questions revolves around the utilisation of Scott McTominay. In the summer, it appeared that the Scottish midfielder was on the verge of leaving, as he had been informed that he wouldn’t be a part of ten Hag’s long-term plans. However, McTominay’s pivotal role emerged when he delivered a crucial brace off the bench against Fulham, coupled with a double against Chelsea last year, seemigly solidifying his status as one of ten Hag’s key players.

This raises the question of whether McTominay’s prominence is a short-term solution to address broader, long-term issues within the United team. Beyond his scoring contributions, what does he bring to the team?

“He has scored goals but that’s not his main strength. He is more of a defensive profile at the midfield, where he can contribute defensively and occasionally score goals.”

“Bruno is a natural playmaker and you would rather have that, so it’s a temporary solution.”
