Manchester United vs Liverpool Prediction: Team News and Betting Tips

Manchester United vs Liverpool Prediction: Team News and Betting Tips
Manchester United vs Liverpool  prediction, team news, lineups and fixtures preview - Chelsea v Liverpool EFL Cup 25/02/2024. Carabao Cup Final Virgil van Dijk (4) of Liverpool celebrates winning the Carabao Cup

The cynosure of FA Cup weekend takes place at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon and, of course, James Cantrill has you covered for Manchester United vs Liverpool prediction, team news, lineups and fixtures preview.

Man Utd’s last chance of silverware lies in this competition but the draw has not been favourable. Liverpool have ambitions of a quadruple to keep alive, and with the wind in their sales following Europa League duties on Thursday, they could make light work of this clash. Our Manchester United vs Liverpool prediction is for Liverpool to win the match 1-3.

  1. Manchester United vs Liverpool  Tip 1: Liverpool Win
  2. Manchester United vs Liverpool  Tip 2: Virgil van Dijk Anytime Goalscorer
  3. Manchester United vs Liverpool  Tip 3: Darwin Nunez Card

Manchester United vs Liverpool  Prediction 1: Rampant Reds

England, FA Cup, Sunday, March 17th, 15:30 (UK)

Love him or hate him, Jurgen Klopp has worked minor miracles recently.

Despite the much publicised injury crisis at Anfield, the Reds have only lost once since the turn of the year and that defeat came at title rivals Arsenal.

Over that nine game period, Liverpool have won eight and been without Mohammed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Allison, Diogo Jota, Curtis Jones, Konate, Thiago, Ryan Gravenberch, Andy Robertson and Joel Matip at various stages. Maybe there are even more players that I have missed.

Somehow, though, the Reds have maintained a quadruple bid.

Since the beginning of 2024, Liverpool have won the League Cup, reached the quarters of the FA Cup, maintained a title challenge and all but reached the quarters of the Europa League.

Having only lost four of their 44 games all season, it is impossible to turn down their price of 1.85 on Sunday, regardless of injury news.

Klopp hailed the second-half performance against Manchester City as one of the best performances he has seen.

Keen to build on that momentum, plus the return of Salah, makes them a bet at Old Trafford on Sunday.

  • Best Odds: 1.83

Manchester United vs Liverpool Prediction 2: Big Virj

Virgil van Dijk was a colossus against Erling Haaland last Sunday.

He did not give the Premier League’s top goalscorer a sniff, limiting the frontman to a single shot.

No player has played more minutes than van Dijk for Liverpool this season, and barring his red card at St James’ Park, I am sure he would have been ever present.

Questions of the Dutchman were asked following that dismissal but he have been a pivotal cog in the second-best defence in the top flight as Liverpool have shipped less than a goal a game.

It is his impact in the other box that interests me at Old Trafford, though.

With a goals per 90 average of 0.10, at first glance, his price to score this weekend may look too short, but Manchester United are one of the worst sides at defending set pieces.

Domestically, no side has conceded more shots from dead-ball situations (141), and their xGA of 12.28 is amongst the worst in the top flight.

Granted, this is obviously not a league game, but given the magnitude of it and the fact it is an all-Premier League affair, I think these stats are applicable.

It is also worth noting van Dijk scored in the third round against Norwich.

  • Manchester United vs Liverpool Prediction 2: Virgil van Dijk Anytime Goalscorer (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 12.00
  • Bookmaker: SkyBet
  • Stake: 5/10

Manchester United vs Liverpool Prediction 3: Cynicism

Darwin Nunez has ten cards in 43 appearances for Liverpool this term, so although cards are not traditionally rife in this competition, at the prices available, the frontman is worth a tout to be shown a card.

The frontman has eight in the Premier League making him the joint-third most cynical player. Although he has only made two appearances for Liverpool against Man Utd, he had picked up one booking in the sides last duel and that came inside 21 minutes.

Although it isn’t traditionally a facet of a frontman’s game, Nunez gets stuck in averaging 0.8 tackles and fouls a game.

Although Harry Maguire has missed the last couple of games for United, he could return on Sunday, setting up an intriguing battle with Nunez.

  • Manchester United vs Liverpool Prediction 3: Darwin Nunez Card (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 4.80
  • Bookmaker: Unibet
  • Stake: 2/10

Manchester United vs Liverpool Team News and Possible Lineups: Salah is Back

In Luke Shaw’s absence, Victor Lindelof should continue at left-back for Manchester United.

Erik ten Hag has been forced to set up without a striker in the absence of Rasmus Hojlund, the Dane is expected to return to the fold against Liverpool though.

As I write, Liverpool are yet to play the second leg of their Europa League last-16 clash with Sparta Prague, but having won comprehensively in the first meeting, Klopp should rest and rotate on Thursday.

This will free him up to go as full strength as possible at Old Trafford on Sunday, with Ibrahima Konate, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Curtis Jones all rumoured to be near a return.

Mohammed Salah featured from the bench against Manchester City and should start here.
