Luton vs Burnley Prediction 1: Plenty of Goals at Kenilworth Road
England, Championship, Monday, August 12th, 20:00 (UK)
Luton finished two points ahead of Burnley last season as both teams were relegated from the Premier League. The three promoted clubs from the previous Championship season all returned to the second tier. There have been significant changes at these clubs during the summer months and their clash on Monday night promises goals.
Burnley struggled to adapt to the top tier of English football and never really looked like staying up. Vincent Kompany was unable to translate his brand of football to the Premier League but he has since departed the club to join Bayern Munich. In their last season in the Championship, the Clarets scored an average of 1.89 goals per game. Scott Parker will be hopeful that his Burnley side can carry the same threat going forward.
Despite lacking the quality required to stay in the top flight, Rob Edwards’ side showed plenty of attacking impetus at Kenilworth Road. They failed to score in just one of their home league matches last season. Both teams have scored in nine of their last 10 league games in front of their own fans and there has been an average of four goals per game over that period.

Luton vs Burnley Prediction 2: A Card-Friendly Referee
There was an average of just 4.22 cards per game in the second tier of English football last season but Matt Donohue, the referee in charge of this one, was amongst the most prolific referees for cards. He handed out an average of 4.69 cards per game across his 29 matches in the Championship. This figure rises to 5.2 cards per game if we use the data from his last 10 league matches, which includes games in League One, the Championship and the Premier League. Donohue officiated Luton vs Fulham back in May and handed out nine cards. It was the only time he refereed one of these side’s matches last season.
This bet had landed in the last two head-to-heads between these sides at Kenilworth Road. There were six yellow cards in this game last season. The most recent Championship clash in Luton saw four yellows and a red card.
There was an increase in cards in this division last season. The average per game rose to 4.22, compared to 4.08 when Burnley last competed in the Championship. The Clarets’ matches averaged 4.26 cards that season but we should see a slight increase here
- Luton vs Burnley Prediction 2: Over 4.5 Cards In The Match

Luton vs Burnley Prediction 3: The Hatters Force Plenty of Goal Kicks
Luton were fearless last season and they will undoubtedly have the same approach this season. Rob Edwards’ did remarkably well to steer them to the Premier League with few expecting them to achieve that dream. Their willingness to go direct and press the opposition makes them difficult to play against. It has also helped them force a good number of goal kicks.
The Hatters forced an average of 8.89 goal kicks per league game at Kenilworth Road last season despite their lowly league position. That was the fifth most in the Premier League, more than the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham. Edwards’ men weren’t expected to dominate home games like some of those sides but their willingness to attack meant they ranked highly in this regard. Luton forced an average of 8.37 goal kicks per game in their last season in the Championship.
When Burnley travelled to Kenilworth Road last season, they had 12 of the 22 goal kicks in the match. The Clarets’ last 10 competitive away matches have seen them average 10.5 goal kicks.
- Luton vs Burnley Prediction 3: Over 7.5 Goal Kicks For Burnley (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 1.83
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 8/10

Luton vs BurnleyTeam News and Possible Lineups: Fewer Changes For Luton
Ross Barkley and Ryan Giles are the main losses for Luton over the summer transfer window. Rb Edwards has a very similar squad to the one that went down at his disposal so don’t expect to see too many changes in the early stages of the campaign. This squad is tried and tested at this level.
Scott Parker is looking to stamp his authority on this Burnley side as he aims to earn another promotion to the Premier League. The club have been busy in the transfer market, signing Mike Tresor and Maxime Esteve for large fees. There have also been other additions.
Luton possible starting lineup:
Kaminski; Walters, Johnson, Mengi; Ogbene, Clark, Baptiste, Doughty; Chong, Adebayo, Morris
