Leeds vs Portsmouth Prediction: Team News and Lineups Preview
Here it is, Tom Winch’s first write up of the season wrapped up in a Leeds vs Portsmouth Prediction preview. Leeds go again. Their 2023/24 season was disappointing after defeat at Wembley. Daniel Farke’s men are the favourites heading into the 2024/25 campaign. Portsmouth are Championship newcomers after lifting the League One title last term. The home side is the shortest price across the EFL this weekend.
Tom Winch has three selections as Leeds take on Portsmouth on Saturday afternoon. The league favourites are likely to begin their season in a winning fashion.
- Leeds vs Portsmouth Tip 1: Leeds -1.25 Asian Handicap
- Leeds vs Portsmouth Tip 2: Mateo Joseph AGS
- Leeds vs Portsmouth Tip 3: Leeds & Under 4.5 Goals
2024/25 Season Preview on The Football Betting Pod: Abundant Ante-Post Angles
We’re back, as host Daniel Jenkins is joined by bettingexpert Football Editor, Sam Ingram, and bettingexpert contributor, Jack Wright, who serve up fifteen selections between them.
The pair take a forensic look at the ante-post outright betting markets with the aim of serving up a number of value selections ahead of the return of domestic football in the Premier League, Championship, League One and Two.
Leeds vs Portsmouth Prediction 1: Trickiest EFL Away Day?
England, The Championship, Saturday, August 7th, 12:30 (UK)
How can we go against Leeds here? An opening weekend clash at Elland Road. It’s a squad full of talent and arguably the hardest venue to visit in the league. Pompey has an almighty challenge on their hands.
There’s no denying the prices. The home side has some fantastic individuals in their ranks. Leeds are available to back at 1.38 whilst the Championship newcomers are as big as 9.00. John Mousinho’s side impressed throughout their League One triumph, as they accumulated 97 points. It’s a sizeable step up now. Away days aren’t often trickier than this.
I’m happy to trust Leeds despite opening day nerves and overwhelming expectations. There’s a gulf in class between the two teams. My selection comes from the Asian market. We can back Leeds -1.25 Asian Handicap at an appealing price.
Leeds racked up 53 points from their 23 matches here last season. The second-best total in the division. Farke’s men conceded just 16 times, an impressive statistic. I’m confident the home side performs well enough for maximum points.
- Leeds vs Portsmouth Prediction 1: Leeds -1.25 Asian Handicap (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 1.850
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 3/10
Leeds vs Portsmouth Prediction 2: Super Spaniard
Mateo Joseph is the outright favourite in the Championship Top Scorer Market. Leeds’ super Spaniard is likely to have a stunning season. Despite not starting a single game last term, the youngster is priced as short as 7.00 in places. Leeds are likely to dominate possession just as they did throughout the previous campaign at Elland Road.
The former Espanyol man started both club friendlies in preseason. Mateo opened the scoring in Leeds’ impressive victory over Valencia. He’ll get opportunities on Saturday. Rutter, Piroe, Gnoto and Daniel James are excellent at this level and will create chances at will. The former is probably the best player in the division. Rutter averaged 0.45 assists per 90 at home last term.
We can back Mateo Joseph at a relatively strong price in this encounter. The 20-year-old will play as the central striker in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Farke’s men are priced at 1.40 and 2.25 to score two and three goals, respectively. We can expect big things from Joseph. He’s one to look out for in 24/25. He has a cracking chance to open his account on the opening weekend.
- Leeds vs Portsmouth Prediction 2: Mateo Joseph AGS (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 2.25
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 2/10
Leeds vs Portsmouth Prediction 3: A Controlled Opening Performance
Let’s talk about the League One champions. John Mousinho’s side could be in for a difficult season in the second tier. They’re priced at 2.20 to finish in the top half. Pompey’s price to finish in the top six is 6.00. That’s the exact figure in the relegation market. They’ll be a robust and well-organised side. Portsmouth conceded just 14 goals in 23 away days last season. They will be without Colby Bishop in this clash, the newcomer’s biggest goal threat.
Following on from my opening selection. I’m supporting Leeds once again in the major markets. We know just how strong they are. Farke’s men racked up 90 points in the previous campaign and can count themselves unfortunate not to be playing Premier League football.
Leeds recorded a 16-5-2 (W-D-L) record in the Championship last term at this venue. A respectable 14 wins arrived with four or fewer goals. It’s the opening day of the campaign. There will be excitement but also plenty of tension in the opening stages. Three points is a must on Saturday. I don’t expect to see this being a goal fest. A controlled home victory is likely under the afternoon sun.
- Leeds vs Portsmouth Prediction 3: Leeds & Under 4.5 Goals (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 1.80
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 3/10

Leeds vs Portsmouth Team News and Possible Lineups: New Beginnings
Leeds looks to be in good shape. Their core squad appear to be all fit heading into the upcoming campaign. They’ll play their usual 4-2-3-1 formation with an attack as good as anyone’s. It’s an impressive squad, and there’s no wonder to see them as the league favourites.
Portsmouth lost several players in the summer. Joe Rafferty and Sean Raggert have moved to Rotherham. Jack Sparkes made the switch to Peterborough. Jordan Williams has joined the club from Barnsley. Sam Silvera has come over from Middlesbrough. Josh Murphy will provide experience.
Pompey may take some time to adapt. They won’t be written off if they are to lose this encounter.
Leeds possible starting lineup:
Meslier; Bogle, Struijk, Rondon, Firpo, Ampadu, Gruev, Rutter, Gnoto, James; Joseph
