League Two Tips and Predictions: Fourth Tier Takes Centre Stage

League Two Tips and Predictions: Fourth Tier Takes Centre Stage
Nottingham on Saturday 23rd March 2024. Alassana Jatta of notts County during the Sky Bet League 2 match between Notts County and Salford City at Meadow Lane, Nottingham on Saturday 23rd March 2024.

The international break may be upon once more, but Matthew O’Regan has his League Two acca tips for us. A dominant Gillingham side host a faltering Accrington side, while it is a repeat of the League Two playoff semi-final between Doncaster and Crewe at the Keepmoat, as well as a derby between Chesterfield and Notts County in the early Kick Off.

League Two Tips and Predictions

  • Gillingham vs Accrington: Gillingham To Win
  • Doncaster vs Crewe: Both Teams To Score NO
  • Chesterfield vs Notts County: Alassana Jatta To Score

Gillingham vs Accrington Stanley: Gallant Gills

England, League Two, Saturday, October 12th, 15:00 (UK)

After a mini ‘blip’ that has seen them lose back-to-back games, 2nd place Gillingham will be looking to make amends at home to second from bottom Accrington Stanley.

Mark Bonner is now at the helm at the Priestfield Stadium after a few miraculous years at Cambridge and will be looking to lead the Gills back to League One.

Prior to their shock 0-1 defeat at home to Grimsby, the Gills had won their opening four home games, conceding just one in the process. This defeat seemed to rock them, losing 2-0 at a resurgent Crewe side in the next game.

Still, Bonner will take solace in the fact that his side are joint top and face lowly Accrington Stanley next.

The very public spat between long-standing manager John Coleman and outspoken owner Andy Holt last season suggested all is not well behind the scenes at Accrington, and the start to the season under John Doolan shows all is not well on the pitch either.

Accrington failed to win any of their opening eight games, losing five games in the process – before finally beating bottom of the table Morecambe in a real cagey, dogged relegation scrap.

Despite being 23rd, Doolan’s side have only lost once at home, with their away form massively letting them down – losing all four games on the travels, with two of these games coming against fellow strugglers Cheltenham and Newport.

Saturday’s match up sees one of the strongest home teams in the league pitted against one of the worst away sides in the league.

Doncaster Rovers vs Crewe Alexandra: Repeat of Playoffs?

England , League Two , Saturday, October 12th , 15:00 (UK)

Doncaster and Crewe came into May’s League Two playoff semi final in contrasting form. Rovers had lost just one game in 18, including 10 wins on the bounce, while Alex had just one win in nine.

Still, it was Crewe who prevailed in a penalty shoot-out, despite losing the first leg at home 0-2. The Railwaymen then got dispatched in the final by Crawley and the hangover seemed to linger heading into this season, failing to score in their first three games, also losing 0-5 to newly promoted Chesterfield. Since then, Lee Bell’s side have lost just once as they have climbed to the brink of the playoffs.

The Railwaymen are proving hard to break down since the 0-5 capitulation, keeping five clean sheets in seven league games. Their matches are averaging just 2.1 goals per game despite that scoreline, with ‘Both Teams To Score NO’ landing in 7/9 games.

Doncaster continued last seasons momentum, winning four of their opening five league games. Three games without a win were followed up by back-to-back wins to nil, to see Rovers in fourth place – level on points with all of the top three.

Grant McCann’s side have seen ‘Both Teams To Score NO’ land in 6/10 games, including their last three and five of their last six. This bet also won in 3/4 of the meetings between the sides last season, including both playoff matches.

  • Selection: Both Teams To Score NO (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 2.00
  • Bookmaker: Betfair
  • Stake: 10/10

Chesterfield vs Notts County : Juggernaut Jatta

England , League 2, Saturday, October 12th, 12:30 (UK)

Saturday’s televised games comes from the SMH Group Stadium, with Chesterfield hosting a familiar face in Notts County.

Under the guise of Paul Cook, Chesterfield stormed to the National League title with ease, and are now back in the Football League for the first time in six years. Billed as the bookies favourites to win the league pre-season, the Spireites have had a solid but unspectacular start to the season as they currently sit in 12th.

Saturday’s visitors are Notts County – a side who finished 14th on their return to League 2. The departure of Macaulay Langstaff, who scored 70 goals across two seasons, was a major blow for the Magpies, but in gangly Gambian striker Alassana Jatta, County have a ready-made replacement.

Signed in January from Danish side Viborg, Jatta had to bide his time, starting just six times. The 25-year-old scored five goals in these six starts, averaging 0.88 goals per 90.

This year, he has started five games, scoring four goals for an average of 0.81 goals per 90. Jatta has also averaged 4.65 shots and 2.02 shots on target per 90. Of his 23 shots, all bar one has been inside the area, showing Jatta has the poachers instinct necessary to score in a free-flowing Notts County side.

  • Selection: Alassana Jatta to score (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 3.50
  • Bookmaker: bet365
  • Stake: 8/10
