The big match in Serie A sees the two teams knocked out of the Champions League this week facing each other at San Siro and our Italian football expert, Daniele Fisichella, has prepared Inter vs Napoli prediction, team news, lineups and fixtures preview.
The Partonepoei have already, virtually, handed over the Scudetto to the Neroazzurri, but can they stop their domestic winning streak? Our Inter vs Napoli prediction is for Inter to win the match 3-1.
Italy, Serie A, Sunday, March 17th, 19:45 (UK)
Inter paid a very high price for the numerous scoring chances they missed at both San Siro and in Madrid against Atletico.
The elimination from the Champions League represents a big disappointment for Simone Inzaghi’s men who, thanks to their extraordinary domestic record, were considered favorites against La Liga’s fourth best side.
But Inter suffered the law of the Civitas Metropolitano where Atletico have only lost one game since mid-January 2023 and average more than 2.5 goals per match.
The Neroazzurri did not play badly, actually they had most of the ball in the end, but conceded the Spaniards too many shooting opportunities.
It was only the fifth time in all competitions Inter conceded more than one goal within 90 minutes and overall just their third defeat of the season.
Winning Europe’s top competition has never been the objective of the Milanese side, whose Serie A campaign has been nothing short of excellent.
In fact, with their current points tally (75), they’d have already been crowned champions last season, as Lazio, who finished runners-up in 2022/2023, only reached 74 points in the end.
Napoli were one of Europe’s best teams under Luciano Spalletti, but Inter this season have done even better.
The conquest of their twentieth Italian title is just a matter of time as the hosts might realistically need only four wins out of the last ten games to be crowned champions.
Could the Neroazzurri beat Antonio Conte’s Juventus record points (102 in 2013/2014) in Serie A?
They’ve won the last ten league games and have achieved 11 victories only on two occasions: between October 2006 and February 2007 (when they went on to establish the current top flight’s record of 17 consecutive successes) and during the last Scudetto-winning season, from January to April 2021.
Inter have already beaten Napoli twice this season (3-0 at the Maradona and 1-0 in the SuperCoppa final in Ryad) and have been victorious in all their last five home matches against the Partenopei with an aggregate score of 8-2.
The Neroazzuri are used to starting domestic games on the front foot: they’ve scored in all but one (their 1-0 win against Roma) Serie A home games this season and led at half-time in 13 out of 14 league games at San Siro.
On the other hand, Napoli have found themselves in front at the break in only one (1-0 vs Atalanta) of the seven away matches they played against oppositions occupying the top half of the table.
Last year’s champions failed to score on the road against Bologna, Roma, Milan, Juventus and Lazio, but under Francesco Calzona (whose 3-1 defeat in Barcelona was the first in six games in charge), Napoli found the net ten times in the league: one more goal than what they achieved in 12 games under Walter Mazzarri.
The Partenopei left Barcelona feeling a soft start, as they conceded twice in 120 seconds inside 17 minutes, let them down in an otherwise fairly balanced tie.
The visitors had more than one chance to level the scoring, but in both the first and second leg, they played their best football only when they went behind.
Napoli have only registered one win (6-2 vs Sassuolo) in the last seven trips and five clean sheets on the road in all competitions.
Inter’s Argentine captain, Lautaro Martinez, missed the decisive penalty on Wednesday but he has got a good record against Sunday’s opponents: five goals (three of which at San Siro, and two in the last two meetings) and one assist in 14 games.
Inter vs Napoli Prediction odds via bet365 as at 11:30, March 14th, 2024. Odds may now differ.
For the Nerazzurri, Simone Inzaghi will evaluate the conditions of his players after 120 minutes on Wednesday in Madrid. Sanchez might start upfront with Lautaro and Frattesi in midfield with Barella and Calhanoglu; therefore, Thuram and Mkhitaryan would be dropped to the bench. Dimarco and Dumfries will be the wing-backs, with Darmian ready to come on in the second-half. In defence, there will be Acerbi.
Ngonge is available for the Neapolitans and will start from the bench. In attack, Politano and Kvaratskhelia will play either side of Osimhen. Traorè might find a place in the midfield with Anguissa and Lobotka, Zielinski and Cajuste will be among the substitutes. Rrahmani will direct the defence. Olivera is ahead of Mario Rui in playing as left back.
Inter possible starting lineup: Sommer; Pavard, Acerbi, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella,Calhanoglu, Frattesi, Dimarco; Sanchez, Lautaro Martinez.
Napoli possible starting lineup: Meret; Di Lorenzo, Rrahmani, Juan Jesus, Oliveira; Zambo Anguissa, Lobotka, Traorè; Politano, Osimhen, Kvaratskhelia.
