There were no home victories in the Bundesliga for a second consecutive week. It is the first time in the league’s history that this has happened.

Scott Thornton highlights which sides will struggle once again as the visitors continue to upset the apple cart in the top tier of German football.

A Record Breaking Weekend in Germany

History was made in more ways than one on matchday 25 of the Bundesliga season. It was just the 10th time in the division’s history that there was no home victory over the course of the weekend and it was the first time that it has happened in consecutive rounds of fixtures.

Mainz beat Borussia Monchengladbach on Friday to kick off the action. The win moved them up to 3rd and now they are in with a real chance of holding on and securing Champions League football. Union Berlin also secured a massive away win when they beat Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday. The victory moved them six points clear of Bochum, who currently occupy the relegation playoff place.

Eintracht Frankfurt vs Union Berlin

The biggest shocks came when Germany’s biggest team took to the field. Bayern Munich were beaten by Bochum at the Allianz Arena. Bayer Leverkusen, the reigning champions, were beaten 2-0 by Werder Bremen. Borussia Dortmund also suffered defeat at the hands of Augsburg. It was the first time all three had lost at home on the same matchday in Bundesliga history. The last time they all lost on the same matchday was in the 2006/07 season but not all played in front of their own fans.

Could we be set for more away victories on matchday 26?

Ones To Watch

Werder Bremen vs Borussia Monchengladbach

Werder Bremen ended a five-match losing run by beating Bayer Leverkusen on the road last weekend. They return to the Weser Stadium this weekend but Bremen have a poor recent record in front of their own fans. They have won just one of their last five home matches. In fact, they’ve picked up just three victories in 12 Bundesliga home games this season.  They host Borussia Mochengladbach this weekend.

Monchengladbach have won their last three Bundesliga matches away from home, beating Stuttgart, Union Berlin and Heidenheim. They also beat Werder Bremen when the sides met earlier in the season.

OPTA Statistics

RB Leipzig vs Borussia Dortmund

Both of these sides have become accustomed to playing in the Champions League but they risk missing out due to their poor performances in the league. Marco Rose has been in charge of RB Leipzig since 2022 but he is under real pressure. The team have picked up just one win in their last nine league outings ahead of this weekend’s clash with Borussia Dortmund.

Niko Kovac took over from Nuri Sahin and has set about changing Dortmund’s fortunes. It’s been a mixed bag in terms of results during his tenure thus far. The team have won four of their nine competitive matches but the underlying data shows more promise. Dortmund have won the xG battle in seven of Kovac’s nine games in charge. BVB also beat RB Leipzig earlier in the season so their odds look good here.

Bochum vs Eintracht Frankfurt

Bochum were excellent as they beat Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena last weekend.  They were aided by Joao Palhinha’s red card just before half time but we are banking on them coming crashing down to earth when they face Eintracht Frankfurt in front of their own fans this weekend. The club have won just three of their 12 home games in the league this season. Over that period, they have conceded 0.58 more goals per match than they have scored.

Eintracht Frankfurt have dropped to 4th in the table after a run of three consecutive league defeats. However, they will take confidence from the fact that they have already beaten Bochum 7-2 this season. A win here would put their Champions League chase back on track. BETSiE gives the visitors a 54.2% chance of winning this weekend.
