Ukraine have already exceeded expectations. Getting out of the group stage was an achievement for them. Ukraine finished third in Group C and upset the odds by beating Sweden in the round of 16.
Manager Andriy Shevchenko has led his side to their best finish at a European Championship. They’ve equalled their best finish at a major tournament after reaching the quarter-finals at the 2006 World Cup. Shevchenko played for his nation in 2006 and was their top scorer at the tournament.
England also have a former manager as a player. Gareth Southgate is on a personal mission to guide the English to their first European Championship title. Unlike his counterpart, Southgate’s time playing in this tournament is tinged with regret. England’s best finish at the European Championships was a semi-final exit in 1996. They hosted that year and are playing many of their matches at Wembley this time around.
It’s been a good home for them. England have won three of their four matches at Wembley without conceding a goal. They finished top of Group D but the highlight was that 2-0 win over Germany in the round of 16.
That sets up this quarter-final. Ukraine and England haven’t met since the qualification campaign for the 2014 World Cup. They drew both matches but the English have had the better of it down the years. They’ve won four and lost one of their seven meetings.
One area in which England need to improve is chance creation. Gareth Southgate’s men are the lowest-scoring side remaining in the competition. Five of the nations eliminated have scored more than them and that’s down to chance creation. England have made an average of 6.8 shots per match at Euro 2021. Only Hungary and Finland created fewer.
But former England man Chris Waddle still expects a comfortable win and for England to go far.
“I hope football’s going to come home,” he said in an exclusive interview with bettingexpert.com.
“It’s about time we lifted a trophy with the amount of investment we’ve had in the academy system. We’ve tried for a long, long time. There’s still some talented teams in the tournament but you’re not going to get a better chance.
“All the games at Wembley – except Ukraine in Rome and they’re not a strong side, let’s be honest. I said at the start of the tournament if England didn’t get to the semis minimum you’d be disappointed.
“Beating Germany is a great result but it was a last 16 game, you get nothing for it. You get nothing for the quarter-final or the semi-final. You’ve got to get into that final and win it. There’s still some very good sides left in the tournament and even the so-called lesser nations can, as they’ve proved, upset you.”
Gareth Southgate’s men are the big favourites. England are low at 1.17 to qualify for the semi-finals. It’s 4.95 for Ukraine to upset the odds and make it to the final four.

There isn’t much value backing an England win here. They’re the huge favourites with the bookies so it’s better to look elsewhere. Each of England’s previous three quarter-final matches at the European Championships finished level at the 90-minute mark.
That’s why we’re backing the sides to draw. Expect Ukraine to sit back and England to grow frustrated as the match progresses, much like their match with Scotland in the group stage. Corners are likely but goals aren’t with this England side that struggles to create chances.
