Portugal Euro 2021 Group F Fixtures
Portugal would surely like to have avoided France and Germany until the later stages of the competition. But this will be their ultimate test and opportunity to prove that 2016 was not a fluke.
They have been placed in arguably the most difficult group in the tournament, and they will certainly have their work cut out for them. Group F consists of France, Germany, Portugal and Hungary.
Portugal will travel to Budapest to face Hungary on June 15th in their opener. This will be an excellent opportunity to start the tournament with a victory against the weakest team in the group.
Following that, they will travel to Munich to face off against Germany on June 19th. With how both teams have been playing in recent matches, this one seems very evenly matched. But Germany will be enjoying home advantage, along with not having to travel for their first three matches.
Their last match of the group stage will have them going back to Budapest to ‘host’ France on June 23rd for their toughest assignment yet.

Portugal Euro 2021 Qualification & Form
Portugal played well to qualify for the 2020 Euro, winning five of their eight games and finishing second in their group.
They started the qualifiers slow, drawing their first two matches against Ukraine and Serbia. But they bounced back quickly to defeat Serbia 4:2 in their next match, and Lithuania and Luxembourg following that.
They lost their next match against Ukraine with a 1:2 result, but finished strong with two more victories over Lithuania and Luxembourg.
Their defeat to Ukraine cost them first place in Group B of the qualifiers, and ultimately landed them in Group F of the Euro 2021 tournament.
Portugal’s most notable performance in the qualifiers was a 6:0 beatdown against Lithuania on November 14th, where Ronaldo notched a hat-trick.

Portugal Euro 2021 Squad & Manager
Manager: Fernando Santos
Goalkeepers: Anthony Lopes, Rui PatrÃcio, Rui Silva
Defense: João Cancelo, Rúben Dias, José Fonte, Raphael Guerreiro, Nuno Mendes , Pepe, Nélson Semedo
Midfield: William Carvalho, Danilo, Bruno Fernandes, Gonçalo Guedes, João Moutinho, Rúben Neves, Sérgio Oliveira, João Palhinha, Pote, Renato Sanches , Bernardo Silva
Forwards: João Félix, Diogo Jota, Cristiano Ronaldo, André Silva, Rafa Silva
Fernando Santos enjoys a lot of respect as Portugal’s manager, having given them their first ever Euro Championship in 2016 along with the Nations League title in 2019.
Santos was offered the manager position in 2014 after his contract as the manager of the Greek national team expired. Santos has been in charge of this squad in 82 matches so far, and holds a record of 51 victories, 19 draws and 12 defeats. He will lead the Portuguese team again at the Euro 2020 tournament, hoping to give this team their first ever back-to-back European Championship.
Here is Santos’ record as Portugal’s manager:
Team | From | To | Pld | W | D | L | W% |
Portugal | Sept. 2014 | Present | 83 | 51 | 20 | 12 | 61,45 |
Portugal’s squad is valued at about 769,00 million euros, and the quality is there to back it up. Santos will, once again, have the opportunity to choose from a rich pool of talented and experienced players.
Their goalkeeper position isn’t looking very promising, with Lopes not being in the best form for his club in Lyon.
Their defensive line is looking solid with Cancelo, Dias, Mendes and Duarte. Neto, Fonte and Soares are also viable options for him, depending on fatigue and tactics.
The biggest question for Santos will be the Cristiano Ronaldo enigma. Many have questioned whether he does more harm than good and the fact that Portugal won the 2016 title with him sidelined does not help his case. With young players emerging like Jota and Neto, it’s clear why some would like to see him accept a more passive role for the good of the team.
Portugal certainly have a quality team, but they need to rally together and come out in this tournament as a team, or the pieces may again add up to less than they are worth.

Portugal Euro 2021 Odds
Despite being in group F and their most recent form, the bookmakers have Portugal qualifying past the group stage at 1,29 odds. Unless Santos makes a significant change, these odds are too generous.
The bookmakers also have them finishing atop Group F at 4,40 odds. It’s very difficult to see them getting past the defending World Cup champions in France to accomplish this feat.
Portugal are given 3,25 odds of reaching the semi-finals and just 5,00 of reaching the final.
Regardless of the current situation, Ronaldo is still favored by the bookmakers to be in the conversation for top goalscorer. They have placed him in the top five and give him 13,00 odds of accomplishing this feat.

Portugal Euro 2021 Prediction
Given their recent play, Portugal haven’t been consistent enough for the odds they received by the bookmakers. There is no doubt that this is a team full of quality players, but the questions about their chemistry are concerning.
Regardless, Fernando Santos is an experienced manager and he will make the necessary changes to ensure his team’s success. Although defending their title is not something we can expect from this team, a realistic expectation would be for them to reach the semi-finals.
Portugal prediction: To reach the semi-finals at 3,25 odds.
