After five weeks and 50 matches, we’re approaching the end of Euro 2021. The 51st and final game of the competition will take place on Sunday when we will crown the winner. Italy and England have beat out the competition to get to this stage but only one side will remain after Sunday.
The Italians have impressed. Roberto Mancini’s dark horses topped Group A and quietly moved through the knockout rounds. They got past Austria and Belgium before reaching the final four. There they met Spain The Azzurri needed penalties to get past La Roja but Italy booked their place in the final.
England got there too after beating Denmark. Gareth Southgate’s men topped Group D and enjoyed a convincing run to the semis. They beat the old enemy, Germany in the round of 16 before a comfortable 4-0 victory against Ukraine in the quarters. Harry Kane’s late rebound after missing a penalty secured a 2-1 win over Denmark.
It’s hardly a common fixture. England and Italy have met three times before in major tournaments and the Azzurri won them all. That includes their only previous meeting in the European Championships. That was back in 2012 and the Italians won on penalties on their way to the final.
Fine margins often separate teams in finals. It looks as if this one won’t be any different. England and Italy boast excellent defensive records at Euro 2021. Italy have kept clean sheets in half their matches and haven’t conceded more than once in a match. England kept five clean sheets from six and only conceded once.
A lot of that is down to how few chances they concede. England have allowed an average of 8.7 shots per game at Euro 2021. Italy have allowed only 4.0 per match, the lowest of any side in the competition.
One big difference is how they attack. England have struggled to create chances at times and have averaged 7.3 shots per match. Only Hungary and Finland have created fewer chances per match than them. Italy have had an average of 20 shots per match, the highest in the competition.

Don’t be surprised to see the Italians triumph at Wembley on Sunday. Roberto Mancini’s men have quality at both ends of the pitch and have built a winning habit over the last few years. They’re the best side England have faced in this competition by some distance.
Expect the trend of shots on target to continue. Italy don’t allow too many on their goal but they create a few of their own.
This match may go down the same route as the 2016 final. France were playing on home soil in a match many assumed they would win. Portugal sat deep and frustrated them which led to a lot of bookings. 10 players received cautions that night at the Stade de France. We may not see that many at Wembley but we should expect a few.
