It’s 149 years since England vs Scotland first played. It’s the oldest international fixture on the planet and has produced some incredible matches. These sides haven’t met in a major tournament since Euro 1996. Alan Shearer and Paul Gascoigne scored memorable goals in a 2-0 England win.
It’s been four years since they last met. England needed a 93rd-minute Harry Kane goal to escape Hampden Park with a draw. The English have the better record in this fixture. They’ve won 48 meetings compared to Scotland’s 41.
Playing at Wembley works in England’s favour. This is the 33rd time these sides have met at either version of Wembley Stadium. None of the previous 32 meetings have finished goalless so we should expect goals.
But this is about more than pride. Progression to the knockout stages of Euro 2021 is there to play for. Scotland need to take something from this match against the Auld Enemy. A loss won’t eliminate them but the odds are against Scotland after that 2-0 defeat to the Czech Republic on matchday 1. The Scots had an xG of 1.9 but failed to find the net. They can’t afford a repeat against England.
Gareth Southgate’s men showed good tactical adaptation in their opener. The 1-0 win against Croatia was full of pressing, pressure and game management. Win here and they’ll secure progression to the next stage of the competition.
Former Scotland international Pat Nevin believes this adds an extra layer of pressure.
“The expectation is high for England and to be beaten by Scotland isn’t embarrassing but it’s not far off it,” Nevin said in an exclusive interview with bettingexpert.com.
“Whereas Scotland are nearly out of the tournament, which is a positive and a negative, the positive is they can play with abandonment, but the negative is that they’re nearly out and they will fear going out.
“I’d rather be in England’s place going into this match. You’d rather walk out there as England with three points in the bag, playing at home and knowing if you win then you’re through.”
They’re the favourites to do that. England are 1.33 to secure the three points at Wembley. It’s 5.50 for the sides to draw and 11.00 for Scotland to pull off a shock win.

We should see a comfortable win for Gareth Southgate’s men. England are the big favourites to secure the three points and to seal their place in the knockout stage. Expect them to secure a convincing victory full of attacking flair and goals.
If the goals start going in then there are two obvious candidates. Harry Kane won the Golden Boot in his previous major tournament for England. He won’t need a second invitation to score. Raheem Sterling has 19 goal involvements in his last 17 appearances for his country.
