It’s the second of two matches that will decide the finalists of Euro 2021. England and Denmark are battling it out at Wembley to face one of Italy and Spain.
The English have the advantage of playing on home soil. Gareth Southgate’s men have played all but one of their matches at the home of football and it’s worked in their favour. England have won four out of five and are yet to concede a goal. Their 4-0 win over Ukraine in Rome was impressive but the 2-0 victory over Germany was the highlight.
Denmark have had extreme highs and lows in this tournament. The momentum is with Kasper Hjulmand’s side after a string of impressive results. Denmark beat Wales 4-0 in the round of 16 before facing the Czech Republic in the quarters. The Danes won 2-1 against a side that only lost 1-0 to England in the group.
That sets up this match. England and Denmark haven’t met at a major tournament since the 2002 World Cup. Incidentally, that was the last time the English beat the Danes in a competitive match. They met twice in the Nations League towards the end of 2020. The sides drew 0-0 in Copenhagen but Denmark won 1-0 when they met at Wembley last October.
We could see another tight match here. England are a difficult side to score against as we’ve seen during this tournament. They’re the only nation yet to concede a goal with five consecutive clean sheets. They have the lowest expected goals against of any side left in the competition. Their non-penalty xG Against is 3.1 while Denmark’s is 4.4.
But the trade-off for England is a lack of chances. Gareth Southgate’s men have had a non-penalty xG For of 5.0 in this tournament. 2.14 of those expected goals came in the 4-0 win over Ukraine.
But former England defender Wayne Bridge is backing Gareth Southgate’s men to go all the way.
“It does feel like something special is happening with the squad and the manager,” he told bettingexpert in an exclusive interview.
“You’ve got two games at Wembley to go and win a major tournament. I don’t think we’ll get a better chance to do it.
“Before the Ukraine game I was thinking we can’t underestimate them and it’s still difficult to go and win. But they go and win like they did and you think, ‘it’s happening, isn’t it?’
“We’ve got a great manager and a great squad so I think it’s ours to lose. But there’s still some good teams left in it.”
Bridge ranks Denmark among those good teams.
“They have a togetherness and robustness around the squad which can only help in these situations,” he went on.
“I like [Mikkel] Damsgaard. You know as a 21-year-old to come to a tournament like this and put in the performances he has is incredible. Hasn’t obviously made that many appearances for Denmark, but has played this tournament like he is a 60 cap veteran.
“He is quick, skilful, intelligent and has obviously chipped in with some important goals. He will definitely be a contender for young player of the tournament and would have likely caught the eye of some teams across Europe.”
But Damsgaard and his Danish teammates are still the big outsiders. Denmark are 3.25 to qualify for their first major tournament final for almost 30 years. England are 1.34 to reach their first major tournament final for 55 years.

England are the favourites for a reason. They haven’t conceded throughout the tournament and look likely to reach the final. England to win to nil is a good punt.
Corners are likely when a side dominates a match. That should be the case here for Gareth Southgate’s men. It’s also hard to look beyond Harry Kane. The Spurs man has 27 goal involvements in his last 26 matches for his country. He’s a good pick to score after his brace against Ukraine.
