England vs Slovenia Prediction: Euro 2024 Team News and Lineups Preview

England vs Slovenia Prediction: Euro 2024 Team News and Lineups Preview

Despite much criticism for their style of play, optimism is rife ahead of England’s next match, and Matthew O’Regan has his England vs Slovenia prediction, team news, lineups and fixtures preview. While England are all but through, a point will mathematically confirm it, while a win cements their spot at the top of the group. Slovenia have drawn both games 1-1 and know a win will see them through.

  1. England vs Slovenia Tip 1: England to Win to Nil
  2. England vs Slovenia Tip 2: Adam Cerin Over 44.5 Passes
  3. England vs Slovenia Tip 3: Conor Gallagher to be Booked

England Have not been in the same bracket, claims Silvestre

Have you been surprised by the lacklustre performances? Why do you think that’s happening?

“It’s a confirmation of what we’ve seen during the last few months with England. You don’t turn up to a tournament and suddenly show your best form. It’s in the making. So. It was coming. It was coming.”
“The best teams in this tournament. They’ve been on the front foot. Very.Positive, very aggressive going forward and consistent. And I would say for England the players have a positive attitude, but as a style of play, in general, it’s been too fragmented. There’s a lack of consistency in that way.”

They should qualify from the groups, do you think they should still be considered contenders or not looking at their form?

“No, they are not, they haven’t shown enough in the first two games to be in the same bracket as Spain and Germany. One degree less,France because we haven’t scored but we had chances. Portugal as well.
“It’s not impossible for England to change that. but it’s difficult during a tournament. You can grow. So maybe they’re going to grow into it, into becoming a beast. So that’s that’s what it’s going to take.”

England vs Slovenia Prediction 1: Gareth Safegate strikes again

Germany, Euro 2024, Tuesday, June 15th, 20:00 (UK)

England currently sit atop of Group C. Having scraped past Serbia 1-0, Gareth Southgates men then drew 1-1 to Denmark in a leggy, lethargic performance. Still, qualification is in England’s hands, with a draw enough to top the group – providing Denmark don’t beat Serbia.

The Three Lions have now conceded just seven goals in their last 14 major tournament games, keeping nine clean sheets in this time. Despite having an abundance of attacking talent, Southgate favours pragmatism, preferring to err on the side of caution.

In the 1-0 win against Serbia, a Jude Bellingham header saw England go into the lead after just thirteen minutes. From here, England set up shop and were hard to beat, with Serbia having just one shot inside the box, with their six shots combining for a lowly 0.18 xG.

Despite being poor against Denmark, England only conceded 0.82 xG, with their goal coming in the way of a long-range strike from Morten Hjulmand. Southgate will know his side have enough to scrape through, so expect another defensively solid performance for the favourites.

Slovenia have pleasantly surprised many at this tournament, gaining draws against Serbia and Denmark, despite being underdogs in both matches. Matjaz Kek’s side struggled for possession in the opener, recording just 32%. However, a 77th minute long-range strike from Erik Janza saw Zmajčeki steal a point.

The game against Serbia ebbed and flowed, with both teams spurning golden chances to open the scoring before Karnicnik scored from six yards out after 69 minutes. Slovenia looked set to hold for a historic three points before a Luka Jovic header from the last kick of the game broke Slovenian hearts.

Slovenia know they are up against it, especially when you take into account their lack of creativity. I expect England to take the lead and be conservative once again, keeping their 10th clean sheet in 15 tournament games.

England vs Slovenia Prediction 2: Cerin to rack up the passes

As mentioned, England’s game plan this group stage seems to be to gain an early lead and sit on what they’ve got. I fully expect this to be the case in a nervy match against Slovenia. The underlying metrics for the Three Lions are worrying, with only Scotland recording a lower tournament xG total and only two teams with worse PPDA (presses per defensive action) than England. Their PPDA against Denmark was a staggering 28.

Denmark just shaded the possession, but their players managed to rack up some high pass totals. Centre backs Joachim Anderson and Jannik Vestergaard hit 74 and 75 respectively, while Pierre-Emile Højberg ended on 83 from midfield.

Despite Serbia being a more direct, physical side than Denmark and ending with less possession than England, they too saw plenty of passes for their side. Centre backs Milos Veljkovic, Nikola Milenkovic and Strahinja Pavlovic had 68,80 and 47, while Sasa Lukic and Nemenja Gudeji got 52 and 35 each, despite only playing 61 and 46 minutes each.

England’s potent attack should see them head into an early lead, thus allowing more passing opportunities for Slovenia.

Even though Slovenia only recorded 32% and 39% possession in their two openers, Adam Cerin still managed 44 and 45 passes.

  • England vs Slovenia Prediction 2: Adam Cerin Over 44.5 Passes (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 1.83

England vs Slovenia Prediction 3: Livewire Gallagher

Much of the talk prior to this summer’s tournament centred around who Declan Rice’s midfield partner would be. Gareth Southgate experimented and went with an out-of-position Trent Alexander-Arnold. However, the Liverpool right-back was subbed after 54 minutes against Denmark – a clear indication that the experiment is over.

His replacement was Conor Gallagher, who was also the first player subbed on when holding on against Serbia. The Chelsea skipper seems to be ahead of Adam Wharton and Kobbie Mainoo in the pecking order, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him start on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old was a livewire in his 21 minutes against Serbia, winning three fouls and committing one. He was also booked for his only foul in the draw with Denmark.

He became renowned for his tenacity for Chelsea, averaging 0.20 yellows and 2.38 fouls per 90. In Slovenia’s opener vs Denmark, centre midfielder tPierre-Emile Højberg made one foul, while his partner Morten Hjulmand made two fouls and was carded. Sasa Lukic was booked in the match against Serbia, so a centre midfielder has been booked in both of Slovenia’s games.

England vs Slovenia Euro 2024 Team News and Possible Lineups: Changes for Southgate

England have struggled in their two openers, with many players playing out of position and being restricted by this. Southgate has some big dilemmas to solve. While Kyle Walker, John Stones and Marc Guehi have performed excellently, Kieran Trippier has struggled out of position at left back. A decision might need to be made on whether Joe Gomez takes his place, but Southgate is likely to keep his faith.

With the Alexander-Arnold experiment in midfield seemingly failing, Conor Gallagher is expected to fill in. Logically, Jude Bellingham would drop deeper, with Phil Foden centrally and Anthony Gordan on the left as a runner for Harry Kane, however his 0 minutes so far suggests this may not be the case.

Slovenia have fielded the same starting XI in both games and it would not be a surprise to see another unchanged side form Matjaz Kek. Wingers Peter Stojanovic and Jan Mlakar are yet to play 90 minutes, so are the duo most at risk of rotation.

England possible starting lineup: Pickford; Walker, Stones, Guehi, Trippier; Rice, Gallagher; Saka, Bellingham, Foden; Kane

Slovenia possible starting lineup: Oblak; Karnicnik, Drkusic, Bijol, Janza; Stojanovic, Cerin, Elsnik, Mlakar; Sesko, Sporar
