Barnsley vs Crawley : Tide Turning for Tykes

England, League One, Saturday, January 4th, 15:00 (UK)

Barnsley had a mixed start to the season, with their away form propelling them into playoff contention, but their home form making it hard to make a claim for automatic promotion. However, a 2-1 win over high-flying Wrexham at Oakwell saw them move back into the top six, although the top two of Birmingham and Wycombe still look out of reach.

Darrell Clarke’s side recorded just their third home triumph of the season, making it four wins from five league games, with a 0-4 home loss to Leyton Orient souring the record. Still, the recent run is cause for optimism, defeating Exeter, Bolton and Peterborough away, scoring seven goals in the process.

The Tykes have now scored in 19 league games this season and look potent in attack, with Davis Keillor-Dunn, Max Watters and Stephen Humphrys providing Clark with a selection headache. Adam Phillips has also continued his fine attacking form. The 26-year-old midfielder is now on seven goals for the season.

Clark will be worried about his sides defensive issues, failing to keep a clean sheet in ten games, registering just three all season.

One of the clean sheets came against Saturday’s visitors, Crawley, in a 0-3 route in August. Scott Lindsey has since departed the Red Devils, with Rob Elliott in the dugout at the Broadfield.

Crawley currently occupy the final relegation spot but sit just two points off Bristol Rovers with a game in hand. Despite leading 1-4 at half time at Exeter, Crawley crumbled to draw 4-4, making it four games without a win. Elliott’s side have now conceded 40 goals- the fourth most in the league.

Against a strong Barnsley attack that is seemingly turning a corner, Crawley could be in for a long afternoon defensively.

Wrexham vs Peterborough: Wrexham havoc in the penalty area

England, League One, Saturday, January 4th, 15:00 (UK)

Wrexham are looking to make it three promotions in three years and sit just two points off the automatic promotion playoffs in League One. Phil Parkinson’s side have lost just four times this season – all four coming away from home.

They boast a near impeccable record at the Racecourse Ground, winning 11 and drawing two of their 13 games, scoring 27 goals and conceding eight. Of their 11 wins, eight have seen them score at least twice.

Visiting North Wales are a Peterborough side with a pitiful away record, picking up just eight points on their travels, conceding an average of two goals per game. A 2-2 draw at Burton made it four games without a win in the league. Posh have won just once in eight league games, with Darren Ferguson coming under scrutiny from a section of the crowd after they dropped to 18th.

Defensively, they are the worst side in the league having conceded 45 goals, failing to keep a clean sheet yet. Of their 12 league losses, Peterborough have conceded at least two goals in 10 of them, the exceptions coming against Bolton- a game in which the hosts had 3.01 xG and at home to bottom-of-the-table and lowest scorers Burton Albion.

The sides met at London Road in August, with the Red Dragons running out 0-2 winners. A repeat of this will see the bet win.

  • Selection: Wrexham Win and Over 1 Goal (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 1.90
  • Bookmaker: bet365
  • Stake: 10/10

Cheltenham vs Walsall : Lowe Love-in

Country, League Two, Saturday, January 4th ,12:30 (UK)

Saturday could be the last time we see Nathan Lowe in a Walsall shirt, with rumours mounting that parent club Stoke City may recall him and send him to a club in a higher division. It would not be a surprise to see. Lowe has proven he is too good for League Two, with his 14 goals putting him in the lead for the golden boot hunt.

The 19-year-old scored the winner against Notts County, sending his side12 points clear at the top of the table, while scoring in his fourth consecutive match. Lowe is now averaging 0.72 goals per 90 and is a shoe-in for the Golden Boot should he see out the season at the Saddlers.

If he is recalled to Staffordshire, Lowe will want to go out with a bang. Walsall travel to Cheltenham in League Two’s early kick off. The Robins have improved in recent weeks but still look fragile in defence having conceded 36 goals already this season – the most in the top 17.

Four of Cheltenham’s five clean sheets this season have come against the bottom four, who are also the four lowest scorers in the league. The other came against a stuttering Port Vale side who have scored just once in six games. Michael Flynn’s side may struggle to keep a sixth clean sheet against a free flowing Walsall who boast the most potent striker in the league.

  • Selection: Nathan Lowe to Score (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 3.20
  • Bookmaker: bet365
  • Stake: 10/10
