International breaks can often disrupt the rhythm of top football clubs, with players travelling across the globe to represent their countries. This can lead to injuries, fatigue, and poor preparation, making post-break fixtures unpredictable. Yet, recent stats show that betting against top teams after the break may not be the best strategy. Let’s dive into how you should approach the return of domestic football in Europe’s top leagues.

Backing Top Teams: A Winning Strategy

Despite the common belief that international breaks negatively impact elite teams, data suggests otherwise. Over the last season, Europe’s top four leagues saw strong performances from their biggest clubs after the break. Backing top teams across Europe seems to be the best option, considering that since last season, the stronger sides have collected 36 wins, nine draws, and only four defeats post-break.

Manchester City, for instance, look unstoppable despite sending 13 players on international duty. Their upcoming fixture against Wolves is likely to extend their unbeaten streak, even though Wolves surprised them with a 2-1 victory last season. Arsenal, another team to back, will welcome 10 players returning from international duty and face Bournemouth, a team they’ve beaten comfortably in their last four meetings.

Mid-Table Opponents: Top Teams to Back

Backing the top sides against lower or mid-table teams appears to be a profitable strategy. Arsenal’s record against Bournemouth, for example, boasts an aggregate score of 13-2 over four games since 2022. Similarly, Manchester United face Brentford, and Aston Villa head to Fulham, both games where backing the favourites looks promising.

The international break allows elite teams to rotate squads and utilise the five-substitution rule, ensuring their star players are fresh. This enhanced depth, alongside effective recovery from travel fatigue, keeps the top clubs performing at a high level post-break.

Caution in Top-Table Clashes

However, when two top teams face off right after the international break, a more cautious approach is needed. For example, Roma vs Inter Milan and Liverpool vs Chelsea this weekend could result in low-scoring matches or a potential 0-0 draw at halftime. In Italy last season, top teams played three post-break games, all tight affairs, including Juventus’ 1-0 win over AC Milan and Inter Milan’s 1-1 draw with Juventus.

In Spain, Real Madrid and Barcelona also tend to remain strong after breaks. Madrid has an eight-game winning streak against Celta Vigo, making them a strong bet to win and possibly keep a clean sheet. Meanwhile, Barcelona face Sevilla, a side that struggles away from home, making a comfortable Barça victory a sound choice.
