Best Value World Cup Teams: Our Writers Pick The Best Value Nations

Our Writers Pick: Best Value World Cup Team
Which teams carry the most betting value at the 2022 World Cup? There are always a few that upset the odds and massively outperform. We saw that at the European Championships last year and we’ll see it again here.
In the latest of our series of articles, we’ve asked our writers who they think that side will be in Qatar 2022. Here are who our writers think will be the teams to avoid at this World Cup.
Our Writers Pick:
- World Cup Winner
- World Cup Golden Boot Winner
- World Cup Semi-Finalists
- World Cup Golden Ball Winner
- Worst Value World Cup Team
Back Denmark in Group D
Denmark find themselves in Group D which they should be content with despite matching up with the current World Cup holders. Tunisia and Australia will also play in the group which should see the European nations dominate.
Denmark faced France in the Nations League in June and September and on both occasions won the match, Didier Deschamps’ nation struggled massively as they managed just five points and five goals in six matches in the competition.
The Danes are priced at 4.00 to finish in top spot which seems valuable given the recent success over what should be their toughest opponents. Australia and Tunisia will for sure have plenty of fight in them but will be expected to fall short.
The 1.40 price for France to reign victorious in Group D appears to be a little small. With a much bigger price of 4.00 for Kasper Hjulmand’s side to put down a marker, this seems like an angle to get behind given they have beaten the French multiple times within the last few months.
- Selection: Denmark to Win Group D
- Best Odds: 4.00 (bet365)
- Stakes: 6/10
Another Late Push for Van Gaal’s Netherlands
The Netherlands are more than capable of competing this winter. There were question marks about their forward line, but Cody Gakpo is hitting form just in time to address those woes.
The team are unbeaten since they were eliminated by the Czech Republic in last summer’s European Championships. In the period since, they are averaging 2.73 goals per game. Their opponents are averaging just 0.87.
Louis Van Gaal has managed his country at a major tournament. His side finished third in 2014 with an aging squad. The veteran coach has an abundance of talent at his disposal this time around.
- Selection: Netherlands To Reach The Final
- Best Odds: 6.50 (bet365)
- Stakes: 5/10
Great Danes to Surprise
Denmark are equipped with the know-how and ability to get the better of the most powerful nations on their day. They’ve shown as much in their Nations League group, downing the French, a side the Danes will meet in the World Cup group stages, both home and away.
It would take a monumental effort for Denmark to go all the way. However, if you’re looking for a dark horse to nick a scalp or two in testing conditions in Qatar, Jasper Hjulman’s Denmark may present as the next-best after the leading favourites pack. As an each-way punt at 34/1, it may have some legs if lady luck decides to shine down on them twenty years on from the happenings during UEFA Euro 1992.
The Danes enter Qatar on an impressive run overseeing 11/15 matches since Euro 2020. In World Cup qualifying, nine wins on the bounce were rounded off by a defeat to Scotland after already winning the group – only Germany could match that kind of dominance in European qualification.
- Selection: Denmark Each Way
- Best Odds: 38.00 (SBK)
- Stakes: 1/10
Trust in Ronaldo and Co
Although the absence of Diogo Jota will derail Portugal’s hopes of winning the World Cup, it should not throw them too far off course. Especially as Cristiano Ronaldo will be doing his absolute best to win the tournament for the first time.
Not only that, but Fernando Santos’ men have been handed a rather favourable group stage draw and should arrive in the Round of 16 without breaking a sweat. Clear that encounter and it is most likely Belgium in the last eight.
Win that clash with the Red Devils and the odds of Portugal going all the way will have shortened. They might be pipped at the very last, but an each-way bet to make the final is also worth some consideration.
- Selection: Portugal
- Best Odds: 17.50 (SBK)
- Stakes: 2/10
Forget Denmark, The Value is in Africa
A side containing Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Ruben Dias, Bernardo Silva and Cancelo will always have a chance on any given day. Odds of 16.00 for Portugal look to certainly offer some value but I’m looking deeper.
Turkey were everyone’s dark horses for the Euros which by kick-off meant they were no longer dark! Their performances didn’t back up the hype. For Turkey, this time read Denmark. They certainly hold interest at admittedly an ever-shrinking 34.00. But for real value, I am putting forward AFCON champions Senegal.
The Tricolor Lions reached the last eight in 2002 but exited at the group stage in Russia on the only occasion they have qualified since then. With a whole host of squad members representing elite clubs from the major leagues, Aliou Cissé’s side could well surprise many. Progressing from Group A which contains the hosts, Ecuador and Netherlands is the minimum expectation. After that anything is possible.
- Selection: Senegal
- Best Odds: 131.00 (Unibet)
- Stakes: 1/10
Brazil Should be Lower for Trophy Number 6
Judging by the quality of all the teams at the World Cup, it looks like only Brazil can stop Brazil from winning the World Cup, except, of course, football happens.
The Brazilians are hungry to feel the World Cup after missing out on the last four editions. They only managed to progress past the quarterfinals in the last four editions.
However, with most of the European teams struggling, and Brazil’s great form that has seen them maintain a 15-game unbeaten streak, The Selecao have a good chance.
Tite’s lads would look to play to their highest potential with Neymar as the engine room.
- Selection: Brazil
- Best Odds: 5.00 (bet365)
- Stakes: 4/10
Iran Carry the Value In Group B
It’s time for a sneak peak as I finalise the 2022 World Cup Betting Value Report Cards.
With some of the other value teams already taken, Iran are my offering for this question. They aren’t getting much hope from supporters or pundits in Group B alongside England, USA and Wales. That feels harsh.
Managed by former Manchester United assistant Carlos Queiroz, this Iranian side will surprise in Qatar. They’re in fine form with some eye-catching results against solid World Cup-level sides in recent months.
It’s a team with a solid defence and quality on the counter. They prefer to frustrate and break which will suit them well in this group. All three of their group rivals have shown an inability to break down deep defence in recent matches. Many of these Iranian players won’t have to travel too far to take part in the competition which suits them.
- Selection: Iran to Qualify from Group B (TRACKED BET)
- Odds: 5.00
- Provider: BoyleSports
- Stakes: 4/10
