Augsburg vs Koln Prediction: Team News and Lineups Preview
Ermedin Demirovic, FCA 9 sad in the match FC AUGSBURG - BAYER 04 LEVERKUSEN 0-1 on Jan 13, 2024

Two sides with aspirations at either end of the Bundeliga table face each other this Sunday, and with that Jack Wright is on hand with an Augsburg vs Koln prediction, team news, lineups and fixtures preview.

The home side still very much have eyes on a European qualification place in the Bundesliga top six. They welcome visitors who slipped into the automatic relegation places prior to the international break.

  1. Augsburg vs Koln Tip 1: Augsburg to Win and BTTS
  2. Augsburg vs Koln Tip 2: Kristijan Jakic to Score Anytime
  3. Augsburg vs Koln Tip 3: Iago and Eric Martel Over 0.5 Shots

Augsburg vs Koln Prediction 1: Augsburg’s sweet smell of success against lowly Cologne

Germany, Bundesliga, Sunday, March 31st, 14:30 (UK)

Augsburg’s come-from-behind 3-1 win at Wolfsburg prior to the international break was a fourth successive victory. Only unbeaten league-leaders Leverkusen with nine have a longer winning streak.

The three points at the Volkswagen Arena saw Jess Thorup’s side leapfrog both Hoffenheim and Freiburg to move up to 7th place. The best position they have held in the second half of a Bundelsiga campaign since 2018 and see them just five points off the European qualification places.

While the Fuggerstädter were equalling their club record for Bundesliga wins in a row, it was a weekend to forget for Cologne. Despite going in at the break level, Timo Schultz watched his side capitulate in the second half and ended up on the receiving end of a 5-1 thrashing at home to RB Leipzig.

That heavy defeat dropped the Billy Goats into the automatic relegation zone and seven points from safety with just eight games remaining. A first relegation since 2018 is a distinct possibility and this looks like being their 15th defeat of the season.

At odds of 1.75, the hosts are a fraction short for me to suggest playing as a single. The addition of both teams to score however boosts the price to an attractive 3.50.

Augsburg have only failed to score in one of their 13 home league games this term and that coming to champions elect Leverkusen. While at the same time they have only kept one clean sheet.

Former St. Pauli and Basel boss Schultz has been in charge of four away games since replacing Steffen Baumgart at the RheinEnergieStadion. Despite being winless across those fixtures, they have all seen both teams get on the scoresheet.

  • Augsburg vs Koln Prediction 1: Augsburg to Win and BTTS
  • Best Odds: 3.50
  • Bookmaker: bet365
  • Stake: 7/10

Augsburg vs Koln Prediction 2: Scratch the goalscoring Jakic

The only negative for the home side going into this clash is the absence of “Captain Fantastic” Ermedin Demirović who serves a one-match ban due to yellow card accumulation. The Bosnia international is also his club’s top goalscorer in the league this term with 14 which is an Augsburg top-flight record.

So, who can step up to the plate and fill the void left by the man with 22 direct Bundesliga goal contributions this season? Sven Michel is likely to be the direct replacement, but with just one goal in 16 appearances in his debut campaign for the club, he hardly gets the juices flowing.

Instead I am taking the “London buses” method for this selection. The 3-1 win at Wolfsburg saw Kristijan Jakić score his first goal for his new club since joining on loan from Frankfurt in January. Wasting no time in adding his second less than 20 minutes later to claim his first-ever brace in senior football.

Confidence and momentum are wonderful things in football and I can’t help thinking that having not scored in a match since September 2022 the 26-year-old may now go back to back. What I really liked about those strikes last time out were how different they were. The first a poacher’s effort during a goalmouth scramble following a corner the second calmly stroked into the bottom corner from outside the area.

Odds of 11.00 may just look a little too big come the final whistle this Sunday.

  • Augsburg vs Koln Prediction 2: Kristijan Jakic to Score Anytime (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 11.00
  • Bookmaker: Sky Bet
  • Stake: 5/10

Augsburg vs Koln Prediction 3: Double shot to finish off

My final selection is a two-legged Bet Builder in a market I really like. Player shots is where I am heading and taking a player from each side to have at least one attempt at goal.

From Augsburg I have picked Iago. The Brazilian left-back drew a blank in the win at Wolfsburg in what was his 98th league appearance for the club. The first time in five outings he had failed to have an attempt at goal.

In all, the 27-year-old has had 11 shots across his last seven appearances. His 15 attempts at goal this season is his highest output since joining the club from Internacional in 2019.

Eric Martel is my selection from the visitors. The 21-year-old set up Sargis Adamyan for Koln’s equalising goal against Leipzig last time out and now has two goal involvements in four games after scoring his side’s goal in the 1-1 draw at Stuttgart.

Primarily a defensive-minded midfielder, Martel has improved his forward play in recent weeks, taking at least one shot in eight of his last 11 appearances, having two attempts at goal when these two met at Augsburg in November.

  • Augsburg vs Koln Prediction 3: Iago and Eric Martel Over 0.5 Shots
  • Best Odds: 2.10
  • Bookmaker: bet365
  • Stake: 7/10

Augsburg vs Koln Team News and Possible Lineups: Filling suspended Demirović hole crucial

As soon as Ermedin Demirović picked up his yellow card at the Volkswagen Arena last week he was always going to be the key piece of team news. With direct involvement in 51% of Augsburg’s league goals this term it is some void to fill. Sven Michel will likely deputise for the Bosnian international while Niklas Dorsch, Raphael Framberger and Reece Oxford are other confirmed absentees.

Timo Schultz has no fresh injury concerns but still has to do without three attacking options in Justin Diehl (muscular), Mark Uth (knee) and Luca Waldschmidt (broken leg).

Augsburg possible starting lineup: Dahmen, Mbabu, Gouweleeuw, Uduokhai, Iago, Jensen, Jakić, Maier, Vargas, Tietz, Michel.

Koln possible starting lineup: Schwäbe, Carstensen, Hübers, Chabot, Paqarada, Martel, Ljubicic, Thielmann, Kainz, Alidou, Selke.
