Premier League Darts Best Bets: Night 15, May 19th
Gerwyn Price delivered the goods in the Steel City last week as he bolstered his chances of qualifying for the Premier League finals with victory over Michael van Gerwen.
The Iceman threw superbly all night, defeating Gary Anderson and play-off rival Joe Cullen en route to claiming his second Premier League night win.
This week the eight-man field travel to the O2 arena for the penultimate night of the regular season, with Price and Jonny Clayton’s clash the pick of the quarter-finals.
Although he does not arrive in the best of form, I’m siding with Peter Wright to return to winning ways.
In the past few weeks Wright has struggled to pick up consistent points, with losses to van Gerwen, Anderson and Clayton coming in this time.
However, following his loss to MVG, Wright swerved the Czech Open claiming a “reset” was required, with a queue of talent ready to pounce on the fourth spot that he currently occupies.
Wright has been dealt an ace regarding his opponent, as he faces James Wade, who returns to action after being hospitalized during last weeks action. Assuming Wade returns a little rusty following his spell on the sidelines, I’m fully expecting Wright to pick up the pieces and progress without fuss.
If Snakebite were to win his quarter-final, he would face either Joe Cullen or fellow countryman Gary Anderson in a favourable looking last four match.
Cullen – who boasts the lowest average in the league at 91.85 – has failed to win in his past three matches and seems to be fizzling away as the season reaches its climax. While Anderson is now mathematically out of the tournament and with nothing left to play for, unlikely to pose much of a threat.
On his day Wright can embarrass the very best in the world and I’m betting on the potential ceiling, rather than current form. Considering his need for points and the kind draw, I’m backing Wright to reach the final in this crucial week.
- Selection: Peter Wright to reach the final
- Best Odds: 3.25
- Stake: 7/10
