Premier League Darts Best Bets: Night 14, May 12th
With just three weeks of the regular Premier League season remaining, the pressure is piling on those players outside the top four to pull something special out of the bag to qualify for the playoffs.
Last week in Glasgow, Jonny Clayton claimed his fourth victory of the season and became the first player to secure a spot in the playoffs after defeating Michael van Gerwen in the final.
With MVG and James Wade all but guaranteed their tickets to Berlin, it falls on Peter Wright, Joe Cullen and Gerwyn Price to fight for the fourth spot on the plane.
Cullen has already been given a head start following the news that Wade was withdrawing from night 14 due to illness, so he will face one of Gary Anderson or Price in the last four.
But with Price running out of time to stamp his authority on this Premier League season and considering his favourable draw, I’m backing the Welshman to run riot in the Steel City.
For a player with just seven wins in this years Premier League, Price has been extremely unlucky considering some of his inspired performances. The Welshman was on the wrong end of a 114 average from Wade a fortnight ago and a 106 average from MVG the week before, but I’m not expecting anything near that from The Flying Scotsman.
Anderson remains firmly rooted to the foot of the table, having won just one match in the past seven nights, and although he produced a stellar performance to beat Wright last week, he followed it up with an indifferent average of 89 against Jonny Clayton.
The -1.5 leg handicap in favour of Price therefore looks enticing at evens, and if The Iceman progresses he will face the under-pressure Joe Cullen who will likely be a little rusty following his quarter-final bye.
With Wright, MVG and Clayton all in the other side of the draw, Price won’t get a better chance to get back to winning ways before the league season draws to a close.
