England vs New Zealand Second Test Best Bet

Friday, June 10th, 11:00 (UK time)

Ben Stokes’s England are back in action on Friday as they look to wrap up a series win against New Zealand at Trent Bridge.

In the first Test of the summer, Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad proved their class in a vintage display of duke’s ball bowling, but it was Joe Root’s century that added the finishing touches on a topsy-turvy encounter.

However, as the two teams travel to Nottingham it would be foolish to write of the Black Caps.

Although they fell to defeat, New Zealand’s rustiness can be put down to several players having not touched a red ball for a number of months. Trent Boult, Kane Williamson, and Devon Conway only arrived in England shortly before the Lords Test after the IPL and are likely to improve as the series goes on.

Despite Williamson’s awful IPL campaign and consequent struggles against the County Select XI, I fully expect the Black Caps skipper to get back to scoring runs this week. Henry Nicholls is likely to come back in to bolster the Kiwis middle order and with fast bowling reserves Neil Wagner and Matt Henry chomping at the bit for game time, it wouldn’t come as a surprise to see four front-line seamers picked.

Brendon McCullum’s era as England test coach got off to the perfect start but there are still frailties throughout this inconsistent side. The opening pair of Zak Crawley and Alex Lees flattered to deceive in the opening test of the summer, with Crawley’s chocolate box cover drive getting him in trouble once again.

An over-reliance on runs from Root’s bat also leaves England in a sticky situation if he were to fall cheaply and Ollie Pope remains under pressure following his promotion to number three. A long tail of Matthew Potts, Matt Parkinson, Broad and Anderson is also a cause for concern.

Both New Zealand to win the second test at 2.88 and odds of 8.0 to win the series 2-1 seem to be very generous prices.

  • Selection: New Zealand to win
  • Best Odds: 3.00 (William Hill)
  • Stake: 7/10

Odds as at 5pm June 7th, 2022. Odds may now differ.
