The Euroleague final is finally here as Real Madrid take on defending champions Anadolu Efes at 18:00 (UK time). Both teams have faced ups and downs during the course of the season, but this is a game in which every mistake can cost them the title. Will Real Madrid win their 11th title in club history, or will Anadolu Efes be able to pull off a repeat?

Real Madrid finished the Euroleague regular season 4th in the standings with 18 wins and 10 losses and riding a 4-game losing streak. They were far from the top of their game at the time, but they still easily dispatched a worthy opponent in Maccabi Tel Aviv in just 3 games in the quarter-final. Their performance in the playoffs has been nothing short of elite, and it’s not hard to imagine them going all the way.

Real got past Barcelona in the semi-final on Thursday evening after an 86-83 thriller that could have gone either way. But Pablo Lasso’s boys showed immense composure, maturity and defensive grit to seal the deal at Stark Arena in Belgrade. Real Madrid averaged just 73.9 points allowed per game whilst keeping opponents to a field goal percentage of just 43.7% with 3.4 blocks per game. Their offence also got the job done almost every game, averaging 79.5 points per game and shooting 35.9% from beyond the arc.

The defending Euroleague champions Anadol Efes have made it all the way back to the finals once again, and are looking to complete the repeat with a victory here tonight. Efes finished the regular season 6th in the league standings with just 16 wins and 12 losses with 4 wins in their last 5 games. They got past Olimpia Milano in 4 games in the quarter-finals and dispatched Olympiacos by 77-74 in the semi-final.

Efes played very poor defence all season, allowing 79.1 points per game, but they got their act together almost at the last minute and were able to win 4 of their last 6 games. Vasilije Mici and Shane Larkin are their top scorers this season with 18.1 and 14.8 points per game respectively, but each time these two struggle to get going, the whole team slumps. Luckily, Larkin, Micic and Bryant combined for 12 three-pointers against Olympiacos and they were able to advance into the final. They will be facing a much more dangerous team this time around.

This is it, the final game of the Euroleague season, so get ready for a spectacle. Real Madrid are by far the better and more complete team in this match-up, as they have an array of different players who can contribute with scoring. What’s more, their defence has allowed fewer points per game, and they have 2 world-class centres in Walt Tavares and Vincent Poirier, and they will certainly have the rebounding advantage. Despite being in much better form, Real are available at 1.86 odds to win.

That said, I expect a lot of energy in this game, especially on defence, seeing as how it’s the last game of the season. In these types of situations, Real have proven they can survive and also thrive, as Pablo Lasso’s team has a nice balance of young dogs and experienced vets who can lead the way. If anyone is reaching the 15-point mark in the first quarter, it’s going to be Real.

Efes has squeezed through Olympiacos in the semi-final but their play was far from acceptable. They had no business making all of those threes, and I don’t believe they will have the same luck tonight. Real will have a huge advantage on the boards, and both of their bigs have been swatting away shots left and right. It’s going to be a tough night for Efes’ scorers, and I expect them to go under 78 points.
