The Kansas Jayhawks advanced to the Finals in convincing fashion taking a 16-point win over Villanova in the first of two Final Four semifinal games. The North Carolina Tar Heels took the nightcap in New Orleans and here we are with hardware on the line. I mentioned the fact before the semifinal Final Four game that Kansas is the only team to reach the Final Four that won the regular-season conference title, the conference tournament title while chasing an even bigger piece of hardware should they win the National Championship again. I also brought up the fact that David McCormack had been limited thus far and boy, did that change on Saturday night. McCormack benefited from the few days of rest to show up big against Villanova after helping Kansas jump out to a 40 – 29 lead at the half.
McCormack splashed home 25 points and grabbed 9 boards while the Big 12 POY, Ochai Agbaji threw down 21 points burying 6 of his 7 3-point attempts. As a team, the Jayhawks landed 13 of their 24 shots from behind the arc in the 81 – 65 victory over Nova which amounts to a ridiculous 54.2% for the game.
Kansas was our best bet to win this entire tournament and here they are on the cusp of doing just that after easily covering our -4 play given out here at bettingexpert.
The Tar Heels played the underdog role nicely while sticking two daggers in the heart of Coach K this season. It’s one thing for North Carolina to win the last regular-season home game of Coach K’s career but to take them down again on this stage? Hubert Davis has got his troops playing with all the confidence in the world and they will need it to get past the Jayhawks.
North Carolina only had 2 bench points in their 81 – 77 win over Duke on Saturday night but 4 starters landed double-digit efforts with Caleb Love’s 28 points leading the way. By the same token, Armando Bacot just picked up another rebound on his way to 21 of them overall on the night. He said 21 boards! Bacot eventually fouled out but none of that mattered because Duke looked terrible only converting 12 of 20 free throws while missing 17 of their 22 attempts from behind the arc.
The Tar Heels will be challenging for their 7th NCAA Men’s hoops title while the Jayhawks will be in search of championship #4 in program history. This will be the 7th meeting between these teams in the big dance as the Heels won the 1957 tournament by beating Kansas in the championship game, 54 – 53.
Overall, Kansas is 4 – 2 in the 6 previous meetings in the tournament with the most recent win coming in 2013
- Selection: Kansas -4 points
- Best Odds: 1.90 (Pinnacle)
- Stakes: 4/10
