Our continuing coverage of March Madness brings us to the second day of Sweet 16 action and our resident NCAA Basketball expert Ej Garr has a pair of tips to offer from the 4 games being played today. St. Peters has provided the Cinderella Story to this year’s tournament as they continue to surprise the nation with big wins and Ej believes the Peacocks will not go out without a fight. In addition, the Hurricanes have been impressive to trust they can move on past Iowa State as slight favourites.

The Peacocks have been providing quite a storyline as a 15 seed that has now made their way to the Sweet 16 of the tournament. As 18-point underdogs against the might Kentucky Wildcats, the Peacocks had no concern about covering because they just went ahead and took the outright win to advance and face Murray State. The Racers had only lost 2 games the entire campaign and once again the Peacocks were nearly double-digit underdogs and won by 10 points instead!

The accomplishment for the Peacocks makes them only the third program to reach the Sweet 16 as a 15-seed and once again the line setters have completely disrespected them with another double-digit line against them.

The Boilermakers find themselves as 12.5 favourites and along with Michigan they are the last of the Big Ten programs left doing battle. When the tournament began the Big Ten featured 9 teams in the big dance and they have fallen like flies being highly overrated by the experts.

Purdue is making their 4th Sweet 16 appearance since the 2017 campaign and this portion of the tournament has been a tough spot to surpass for the Boilermakers over the years. The Boilers have won 3 and lost 7 games from their 10 Sweet 16 showings going back to 1988 and they are 0 – 3 in the Elite 8 even when they did advance past this stage.

Miami vs Iowa State Best Bet

The Miami Hurricanes have been underdogs against their first two opponents and what has that gotten them so far? A chance to play as the favourite in the Sweet 16 when they take on the defensive-minded Iowa State Cyclones early on Saturday morning.

The Canes have pulled upsets over USC and Auburn while their own defence has provided the spark to lift them to victories thus far. Miami held USC to 66 points and only allowed top-seeded Auburn 61 points as they cruised to the Sweet 16.

Switching roles, the Canes will now be the hunted as Iowa State find themselves as +2.5 dogs after relying on their defence to help them progress to this stage of the tournament. Iowa State held LSU to 54 points in their tournament-opening affair and then followed that up with an outstanding effort against Wisconsin who only found their way to 49 points.

This game might be low-scoring and tightly contested throughout but I personally think we can rely on the Miami offence to do enough to get past Iowa State and move on to the Elite 8 to face the winner of the Kansas vs Providence tilt on Sunday in Chicago.
