NBA Monday Night Best Bets: January 17th
A very active night in the NBA with a total of 12 games naturally means a lot of betting opportunities. But the following 3 games are the most tempting this Monday night with a lot of heavy underdogs. We had a disappointing 1/3 on a dry Friday night last week, but we have a lot of betting value in these games.
- Atlanta Hawks vs Milwaukee Bucks
- San Antonio Spurs vs Phoenix Suns
- Dallas Mavericks vs OKC Thunder

Atlanta Hawks vs Milwaukee Bucks
The Atlanta Hawks are having a difficult 2021/22 season so far, sitting in 12th place in the east with 17 wins and 25 losses. They are on a 5-game losing streak and coming off a 108-117 home loss to the New York Knicks. The Hawks haven’t exactly been on fire against the spread this season, but they are an excellent candidate for tonight. Only 9% of bettors are backing them to win this home game, and having failed to cover the spread in the last 5 games, they are bound to bounce back.
Although the Bucks are having an excellent season in the east, sitting in 4th place, and just a game behind the Bulls, they are coming off a difficult 96-103 loss to the Toronto Raptors at home. They’ll be making the trip from Toronto to Atlanta in a short time period and with Jrue Holiday and Brook Lopez out for this one, it will be a difficult game. Fatigue will play a huge factor in tonight’s game with both teams having played last night, but Atlanta will have the crucial home advantage, and with 91% of bettors backing Milwaukee, the Hawks are a valuable pick in the handicap market.
Tip: Atlanta Hawks +5.0 at 1.97 odds

San Antonio Spurs vs Phoenix Suns
The San Antonio Spurs are 12th in the Western Conference with 16 wins and 27 losses, but they are coming off a 101-94 home win over the LA Clippers, and are looking to continue their good form. The Spurs have been solid at AT&T Center this season, covering the spread in 55% of their games, and they are coming into this one with an extra advantage. Both teams have had very little rest since their last game, but the Suns are travelling to San Antonio from Detroit, and will surely be affected by fatigue. What’s more, the Spurs are heavy underdogs in this one, despite playing well in both of their encounters against the Suns this season, losing both games by a 4-point deficit.
The Phoenix Suns are having an excellent season this year, and are sitting atop the western conference with 33 wins and just 9 losses. They’ve been terrific on both sides of the floor, but they are travelling to San Antonio from Detroit and will be playing without rest. Their play deteriorates significantly when playing without rest, and I expect fatigue to play a crucial part in this game. The Suns are heavy favourites with 96% of bettors backing them to win, making the Spurs an ideal candidate ATS for tonight.
Tip: San Antonio Spurs +5.0 at 1.95 odds

Dallas Mavericks vs OKC Thunder
The Dallas Mavericks are currently 5th in the western conference with 14 wins and 19 losses and coming off a 108:92 victory over the Orlando Magic last night. The Mavs have won 8 of their last 10 games, covering the spread in 7 and going under in 9. Defence has been the biggest reason behind their recent success, as they have ranked 1st in defensive rating over the last 10 games. Their offence is still struggling to get going, averaging 105.1 points per game during the same period despite shooting solid percentages all around. The Mavericks are one of the slowest teams in the league, and they prefer taking their time to set up offensive plays, and facing a solid defensive team like the OKC Thunder isn’t the ideal situation.
The Oklahoma City Thunder are 14th in the west with just 14 wins and 28 losses on the season. The young Thunder team is struggling to win games, but they have been one of the best teams ATS this season, providing bettors with a ton of betting value almost every night. They’ve covered the spread in 65.0% of their away games this season, and with 92% of bettors backing the hosts for tonight, the Thunder are once again a value bet in the handicap market. Much like their opponents tonight, the Thunder are a slow & low scoring team that plays solid defence, and I expect low scoring numbers and a close game tonight.
Tip: OKC Thunder +11.5 at 1.94 odds
