Miami Heat vs Charlotte Hornets – Under 221.5 at 1.90
The Miami Heat are favourites coming into this one at 1.43 odds to win, whilst the Hornets are available at 2.90. Both teams have had impressive starts to the season, but the bookmakers expect the Miami Heat to take this one.
The Heat have maintained their identity from last season as a tough defensive-minded squad. But their offence has continued to struggle at times, and they often find themselves without reliable scoring options. They are the best defensive team in the league, but they are also very slow, with a pace rating of 100.75. They prevented opponents from scoring 100 points in 3 of their 4 games this season, and I expect them to do the same with the Hornets.
The Charlotte Hornets have had an excellent start to the season, and are currently 2nd in the Eastern Conference standings. They have the best offence in the league with a rating of 114.8, and they play a fast=paced style of basketball. But they haven’t faced a team quite like the Miami Heat this season, and their offence will be put to the test. I expect the Heat to slow the game down and prevent the Hornets from establishing their rhythm.

Portland Trail Blazers vs LA Clippers – Clippers to win at 2.20 odds
The Portland Trail Blazers have had an average start to the season and are currently 8th in the west. They beat the Suns and Grizzlies but lost to the Kings and Clippers to start the season, and their issues from last season continue to haunt them. Though they have a solid but streaky offence, their defence struggles to contain even mediocre teams. The bookmakers have them as slight favourites to win this one at 1.71 odds, whilst the Clippers are available at 2.20.
Although the Clippers have had a disappointing start to the season with just 1 win in 4 games, their win came against the Portland Trail Blazers. They have one of the best defences in the league, and they have proven they can contain the Lillard-McCollum duo, holding them to 32 points combined. In fact, the Clippers seem to love playing against the Blazers, beating them in all of their encounters since the start of the 2019/20 season. I have the Clippers to get the job done again and take the win.

Brooklyn Nets vs Indiana Pacers – Over 223.5 points at 1.90 odds
I expected the Brooklyn Nets to underperform this year compared to bookmaker expectations, but their start to the season has been surprisingly poor. They are currently 11th in the Eastern Conference standings. Their performance on both sides of the floor has been subpar, and their offence was easily contained by the Hornets and Heat. They are nevertheless heavy favourites in this one at 1.23 odds.
The Indiana Pacers have also had a slow start to the season with just 1 win in 5 matches. Their defence is one of the worst in the league, with a rating of 112.5. But the one thing they have been able to do is score. They have a top-10 offence, scoring an average of 113.4 points per game, and this is their best chance of competing in the regular season. It’s difficult to predict the winner of this one, but I expect to see a very high-scoring encounter between two high-scoring but terrible defensive teams, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Harden finally get his offence going.

Denver Nuggets vs Dallas Mavericks – Under 220.5 at 1.90 odds
The Nuggets are slight favourites to win at 1.80 odds, whilst the Mavericks are available at 2.05. The Denver Nuggets have had a mediocre start to the season and are currently 7th in the Western Conference. This isn’t the Denver team we have gotten used to seeing in recent years, scoring just 102.3 points per game, and ranking 10th in defensive rating with 103.5. The knee injury to their star center and defending MVP Nikola Jokic certainly won’t help the flow of their offence, and neither will the continued absence of Jamal Murray. The injury Jokic sustained isn’t serious, but he is questionable for Friday’s encounter against the Mavericks.
The Dallas Mavericks have won 3 of their first 4 games to start the season, and are currently 3rd in the west. Their solid defence has ranked them 11th in defensive rating with 103.8. But their winning run was mostly due to facing weaker teams to start the season, and I expect them to drop down in the coming weeks. Their offence has continued to struggle, and the Doncic-Porzingis duo simply isn’t working. They are ranked 22nd in offensive rating this year, and I don’t see them making a jump without making a significant trade. Both teams have struggled to score since the start of the season, but their defences have performed well, and I expect this one to be a low-scoring affair.
