Despite a four-game advantage in the loss column, the Phoenix Mercury are only a narrow favourite for their trip to Gateway Center Arena to face the Atlanta Dream on Wednesday. Below, we have analysed the statistics of these two teams to provide our Dream vs Mercury prediction.

This is the second meeting between the franchises this season after the Mercury came out on top prior to the Olympics. Atlanta needs to finish the campaign strongly if they are to land a postseason berth.

With the WNBA campaign back up and running after the Olympics, our Expert Insights are stacked with basketball betting tips. Expert Sam Cox will have his best bets throughout the regular season.

Dream vs Mercury Prediction: Value with the Visitors

  • Selection: Phoenix Mercury moneyline
  • Best Odds: 1.77
  • Bookmaker: bet365
  • Stakes: 4/10

Odds updated on August 21st 2024.

Atlanta has played good basketball over its last two games, but we can’t see them getting the better of the Mercury here. Phoenix being just 1.5-point favourites means there’s not much value backing them to cover, and we’d rather go with the 1.77 on the moneyline than risk the Dream covering and losing.

The Indiana Fever are the only sub-.500 team to beat the Mercury in almost three months. Phoenix’s offence has been humming. Atlanta’s offence might have found its groove lately, but their offensive rating is the worst in the Association, and we can’t see them keeping pace in this one.

Atlanta Dream News, Injury Report, Schedule: How Sustainable Is This Leap?

The Dream looked doomed before the break. A run of 11 losses from 12 games left them out of the playoff spots. While they wouldn’t make the postseason if the season ended today, they are only 1.5 games behind the final place. They have bounced back with wins over the Seattle Storm and Connecticut Sun since the season resumed.

Rhyne Howard and Allisha Gray shone offensively in the win over the Storm. The defence was to thank for beating the Sun. It’s hard to know if Atlanta’s performances since the resumption are sustainable given that they are ninth in net rating for the year, and have been the league’s worst offensive team.

Phoenix Mercury News, Injury Report, Schedule: High-Powered Offence

Phoenix is up to sixth in net rating for the year. They have won two of their three games since the break and boast the league’s best offence over the last 10. The defence prevents them from being an elite team, but this offence is capable of blowing any opponent away.

The Mercury have only lost to one team currently below them in the standings since 25th May. This team has made a habit of winning when its meant to all year long, with their offence proving too powerful for the league’s weaker teams.

Dream vs Mercury H2H: Utter Dominance For Phoenix

The Phoenix Mercury have a 27-13 all-time record against the Atlanta Dream. These teams are yet to meet in the postseason. Phoenix won by three points when they met back in April, but Atlanta won the regular-season series in 2022 and 2023.

Prior to that, the Mercury had swept three straight season series against the Dream.
