MLB Best Bet: Tuesday, May 31st
The Nationals and Mets play the second game of their 3-game set on Tuesday night in Queens, NY, and the weather is starting to warm up on the east coast. Ej is playing part tipster, part weatherman today because the forecast is calling for runs to come early and often in this contest offering another 1st 5 inning total.

That’s right we are starting this article with a forecast of the weather and it is certainly for good reason. I live about an hour from Citi Field and if you live here you see what they are calling for here in New York, right? Look up the Flushing, NY local weather, and what do you see but high heat and high humidity expected for the day and night so at 7 p.m here it will still be in our favour for runs to be expected!
Now, we saw what happened on Monday night, right? It was a balmy 87 degrees at the time of the first pitch and tonight it’s going to be closer to 95 degrees F. The Nats poured in 3 runs in the opening frame and the Mets responded with a pair of their runs in the bottom of the first inning. There were 5 runs before they even got the 5th out in the game so we are hoping they go out and repeat that effort tonight. Oh, and they kept playing baseball after the first inning and you can see what the Mets ended up doing to Washington scoring double-digit runs in a blowout!
Granted, if it was that easy we would always just pour our hard-earned cash into these totals but it’s not just about the weather here, kids! Let’s talk about the two goons taking the mound and making the start for each team tonight.
The Nationals are sending Patrick Corbin to the hill and it took him 10 starts to finally pick up his first win of the 2022 campaign. So, he’s got it all figured out now, right? Yeah, stop it!
Corbin got off to the same start a year ago and he ended up with 16 losses with an ERA of just under 6 runs per game. IT’S WORSE NOW! That 6.30 ERA of his sure doesn’t point anyone to a low-scoring affair here and facing the Mets lineup right now is just not fun.
Brandon Nimmo and Dom Smith both sat out of the Monday game and their availability tonight is still up in the air. Check your lineups to ensure you have the dudes we need in there to bash but the Mets still have guys doing damage on a nightly basis. First of all, how cool was it to hear the Polar Bear on the air with the ESPN guys in the booth last night? We don’t normally get that long of a sideline call from a guy actually in the game too often and we got some great stuff out of that.
We all know that Pete Alonso will be the favourite to win a third Home Run Derby in July and his bat is as dangerous as anyone in baseball. I think most of us are a little shocked that the middle infield for the Mets has done well both in the field together and at the dish. Francesco Lindor is having his best season since the 2019 campaign when he bashed 32 homers and was a valuable asset for the then Indians, now Guardians.
Confidence is a fun thing to watch when you see that a guy has done the work and it’s translating to success on the field. Lindor wanted to make his second year in New York a big one because winning here in New York is a big deal. Hey, everyone has the expectations of their teams’ and such, but when you come to NY and play in front of these fans while cashing big paychecks, you better produce, baby. The love doesn’t last long unless you are earning that bread and the Mets are opening up a nice lead in the AL East.
The Mets have never had this big of a lead on Memorial Day, so now it is a matter of not just holding on to it but building it. Remember, this team is without Degrom, Scherzer, and Megill, and the two won’t be back anytime soon either. Well, Tylor Megill might be back in mid-June but Scherer and deGrom are gone into July.
Oh, and Drew Smith? The bonehead who thought trying to deflect a drive back to him last night on the mound with a bare hand was a good idea? Yeah, don’t do that! I was sitting here screaming, ”They teach you that sh… stuff, in high school, man.” Get your pitching hand out of the way from a 55-foot line drive coming back at you because you never do that!. His pinky is going to cost him a good chunk of time on the IL now and stuff like that could end your career. It’s just a pinky? Yeah, NO! It’s the hand you get paid for to throw pitches and not catch without a glove on it!
Sorry, but that was so stupid I can’t even believe I saw the dude do that so Smith is out for the immediate future and RP Trevor May is also out until mid or late July out of the Mets bullpen.
The Mets are sending Trevor Williams to the mound to make his 9th start of the 2022 campaign, and he also has not a win to show on his ledger this season. Might he similarly win his 10th start of the season as Corbin did last time out? We don’t care who wins or loses this game because the total is where we are chasing the money. I see, at least, a 3 – 2 game through 5 innings and I hope they pull off the same feat they did on Monday night so we bank all 5 of those runs in the 1st inning again!
