The Mariners and Rangers will begin a 3-game set in the Emerald City on Tuesday night as both teams had Monday off to reset and regroup. The Rangers spent a good bit of money for some offensive weapons but a 2 – 7 start to the campaign hasn’t improved the landscape of the team just yet.
It’s not that the Texas bats haven’t done enough as much as it the two other standards that baseball lives by… defence and pitching! You know when you see the #30 next to your team name in the rankings that you are the worst in that category because there are 30 MLB teams.
Well, the Rangers are ranked dead-last in runs allowed per game at 6.64/9 innings, and their opponents’ batting average (.292), and OPS (.894) are also the worst in all of baseball. Oh, the 2 HRs allowed per game by the Rangers pitching staff are also good enough to be ranked #30 and that is how you lose baseball games.
Bringing in a few bats to change the outlook in Arlington is obviously not going to be enough to actually improve the ability to get wins from early indications. The offence has tried to counteract some of the pitching struggles as Texas does rank 3rd scoring 5.51 runs per game to start the season.
Jon Gray will be making his second start of the campaign hoping to rebound from a disappointing outing. Gray threw 4 innings on opening day and as you are likely aware his 6.75 ERA leaves plenty of room for improvement. He left the game with a blister and landed on the 10-day IL which is why there is so much time in between starts.
Robbie Ray will be starting for the Mariners tonight as he too got the opening day nod apparently labelled the ace of this staff. He now has 2 starts under his belt and if he does one thing better than anyone else it is serving up the long ball. Ray’s first outing against the Twins to open the campaign saw him hurl 7 solid innings in a 2 – 1 win and he lasted 6⅓ innings from the 6 – 4 loss to the White Sox in start number 2.
Notice the elephant in the room and pick up on the fact that Ray has already allowed 4 homers after surrendering 33 of them a season ago. When you find the prop bet that reads ‘Will Robbie Ray give up a home run tonight’ you should always think about giving him the nod to help you cash that ticket as long as the price is right.
Considering we will get both of these pitchers on the same mound and the line setters seem to be expecting a low-scoring game, that will work out nicely for all of us as we make this a 5* tip. In all honesty, I was expecting at least a straight 9 on this total and it should surely move up from 7.5 as the first pitch for this game arrives.
- Selection: Over 7.5 Runs
- Best Odds: 1.94 (Pinnacle)
- Stakes 4/10
