MLB Best Bet: Thursday, May 26th
For the second time during this campaign, the St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers will meet for a 4-game series and the first contest on Thursday has Ej’s attention. Our resident U.S sports expert is riding the Cardinals youngster Adam Wainwright at home even with the absence of his long-time battery mate Yadier Milona behind home plate.

That’s right, we’re riding on the young, 40-year-old Adam Wainwright today because one thing the dude has mastered is how to pitch at Busch Stadium. Andrew Knizner will likely get the start behind the plate to catch the veteran starter as Yadier Molina is on the short-term DL. Of course, Molina and Wainwright are the most successful battery in the history of MLB with 203 wins so his presence behind the dish will still be missed.
Regardless, Wainwright will be able to help Knizner manage the game because Adam will be the guy making the final decisions on what gets thrown in what situation anyway.
Now let’s talk a little about geography. The Cards have been home for the last 3 days after playing Toronto twice and having yesterday off to rest. St. Louis will be enjoying home cooking for these 4 games and then they’ll get the Padres for a 3-game set here at Busch Stadium.
The Brewers are in travel mode and after Wednesday’s game in San Diego that completed their 3–game set, the Brew Crew will have back-to-back 4-game series’ with the Cards and Cubs before returning home on June 2 to play the Padres again. Those Padres just seem to keep coming up, don’t they?
So, one team is flying and having to get hotel and travel arrangements handled and the other is just sitting here with a day of taking it easy. Now, that doesn’t mean a whole lot other than having to get settled in, but I think there is more than just that angle to play this favourite at home.
After sweeping the Pirates in 3 games on the road, the Cards returned home and split the mini 2-game set with the Jays but they got bet up pretty good on Tuesday, 9 – 1. Missing Molina behind home plate gave Ivan Herrera a chance to call the signs for the Cards but he didn’t fare well as Jordan Hicks barely survived 3 IP and the first 3 pitchers of the game all got tagged for earned runs. With Molina expected back early next week, that will likely be the only start that Herrera gets.
Wainwright faced the Brewers in the first game of the 4-game set that the two teams played earlier on April 14, and Adam was only able to go 4⅓ innings allowing 4 earned runs while striking out 7 batters.
Eric Lauer missed that series and he will start for the Brewers tonight as an underdog after picking up his first loss of the season last time out. The Marlins got to Lauer and blasted 3 homers against him, although he only gave up 4-earned runs in 5 innings. He just got no support that night and you just can’t have your best stuff every night either.
It was his shortest outing since the first start of the campaign so he’ll be hoping to pick up the pieces and get back on the track he was on before that affair. Lauer was 3 – 0 from his 5 starts going into that outing and the Brewers were indeed 5 – 0 in those starts so he’ll be just fine.
Lauer is a stud and he will certainly make it difficult for the Cards to put up any type of a big inning. Getting lit up in his last start might take a moment to recover from and if St. Louis gets to him early they could just rattle his confidence further sending him to the showers early. I don’t like laying any type of juice but 15-20 bucks on Wainwright at home is still fair enough.
This might be a 3 – 2 game so a possible lean on the 1st 5 innings total to stay under might be a good prospect as well. Either way, good luck with this tip and I will see you next week for more baseball.
