MLB Best Bet: Thursday, May 12th
The Mets and Nats play game 2 of their 3-game set on Thursday night and the pitching duel has our MLB expert Ej Garr frothing at the mouth toward the total. Tijuan Waker and Joan Adon will toe the slab to start the game and all they will do is help us all cash another ticket when we play the Over 9 runs action.

Taijuan Walker will finally get to pitch against a player not wearing a Phillies uniform after facing them in all 3 of his appearances to this point of the young season. Walker spent much of his off-season getting back in shape and he is still pretty much trying to find his game having only thrown a total of 11 innings.
If you recall, Walker just threw 5 innings against those Phils on May 5, and they blew him up for 7 runs in what looked like an ugly loss for the Mets. Philly jumped out to a 7 – 0 lead and then it happened! The comeback! The Mets went into the 9th inning down 7 – 1 and they bailed out Walker by scoring 7 runs to come away with the win instead, 8- 7.
So, even with Walker having that L taken off his ledger he still looked terrible although facing the same team over and over again can provide some challenges too, noted.
I don’t care, and if you watched last night’s game between these two as I did, you saw the total hit in the first inning alone. Aaron Sanchez and Tylor Megill got lit up in the first inning for 8 runs and the total was 7.5 so that made a lot of people happy nice and quickly. I don’t know if we’ll get that lucky again this afternoon in the Nation’s capital but we can only hope they come out fighting again.
A day game after a night game might throw a bit of a wrench into each manager’s approach and the Mets have been playing for 17 straight days now without a break. Buck Showalter really struggled to come out and pull Megill with only 1 out in the second inning last night but he had no choice because he had zero confidence and no stuff!
If you recall, Megill cracked this lineup up and held the Nats to nothing in one of his previous starts so he had expectations to perform well. Yeah, that never came to fruition and the Mets bullpen did a great job. If you look at the box score, you see it was 8 – 3 in the second inning and then you see the final score is exactly the same. Neither offence felt like producing much and it’s not like anyone tuckered themselves out after all of the scorings had already been done.
Both teams’ bullpens were outstanding but the longball did Megill in, and I suspect Walker and Adon will have similar problems this afternoon. Joan Adon has an ERA of just under 7 and the 1 – 5 record leaves plenty of room for improvement.
Adon made his first start of the season against the Mets on April 9 and he gave up 4 hits, 4 runs, and a bomb that knocked him out of the game after only 4⅓ innings pitched. I can’t expect either of the two starters to come out and shut down the offences even if the lineups look a little different early. I would check the lineups, of course, and make sure all the dudes we expect to do the damage are on the field.
This is where the DH in both leagues helps out managers a little bit because they can essentially give a player a day’s rest in the field but still have their bats in the lineup. The Polar Bear might DH but overall I still expect the normal names to be there to help us catch the 9 runs we’ll need to cash our tickets.
