NCAA FOOTBALL 2023 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP FUTURES BETTING PREDICTION: THE WOLVERINES TO HOIST THE HARDWARE!
MICHIGAN WOLVERINES VYING TO CLAIM A TROVE OF 2023 NCAA FOOTBALL TROPHIES
Winning is a process, and it has been a long road for the Michigan Wolverines as they chase down their first NCAA Football National Championship since 1997. The Wolverines didn’t even get to enjoy that title alone because Nebraska was also perfect that season, and they too, stake a claim to that 1997 Championship title.
Now that we have the FBS Playoff system in place, there will never be a shared Co-Champion claim again, and next year the playoff scenario will be expanding from 4 to 12 teams.
As I spoke of winning is a process, the Wolverines have endured plenty of hardships before this current rise of success they are enjoying at the moment. Wolverines Head Coach Jim Harbough suffered through 6 years of losing to Ohio State on the final day of the regular season, while the Wolverines finally snapped their 9-game losing streak to the Buckeyes on the road last year.
Michigan won the 2021 & 2022 Big Ten title games, and now they are looking to make this the third consecutive year with the title under their belts. The Wolverines have never outright won 3-straight Big Ten Conference Championships in a row, although they did win the 1947 & 1948 titles while sharing the 1949 edition with Ohio State. (Ironically were not invited to a bowl game while Ohio State played in the Rose Bowl because they recorded a better regular season record.
HISTORY OF THE BIG TEN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
An actual game to decide the winner of the Big Ten Conference started in 2011, and that brought an end to using tie-breaking factors when two divisions were formed. That is now commonplace around the landscape of college football because Conference Championship Games now decide bowl placement and the right to compete in the FBS Playoff.
Having an experienced quarterback who helped propel Michigan into last year’s FBS Playoffs is an absolute positive, as JJ McCarthy has 145 games of starting experience returning from his offensive line. While McCarthy appears in the pre-season Heisman candidate top-10 list, his 22 – 5 TD to INT ratio helped earn him 2nd-Team All-Big Ten honors.
The Wolverines could be favoured in all 12 regular season games on the schedule, even with trips to Penn State and Michigan State along with the home finale against the Buckeyes. Having figured out the Ohio State scheme, Michigan is now the hunted and not hunting so it will be interesting to see how they react to that.
MICHIGAN WOLVERINES LOOKING TO REPEAT PERFECTION
It is not easy to navigate a perfect campaign no matter what the schedule may read or whatever conference your program plays in. Michigan managed to do exactly that last year winning their first 13 games of the campaign before losing to TCU in the first FBS Playoff semifinal affair.
Having now experienced Big Ten Conference domination along with an offense that is poised to put up big numbers, the weather could be the only equalizer we see in that Midwest region of the U.S. November weather by the Great Lakes can always bring a surprise snowstorm or put a big chill in the air that can affect field conditions and the ability for players to stay focused.
MICHIGAN WOLVERINES VS THE REST OF THE FIELD
Another reason I see Michigan as the team to beat is that I don’t believe that USC or Alabama will be a factor in the least in 2023. Caleb Williams could put up another fantastic season in the Pac-12 but what did that get them last year? A New Year’s Day Bowl game to play, and no sign of any Pac-12 teams in the FBS Playoff picture… AGAIN!
It is so hard for the voting committee to get past the SEC and Big Ten dominance, and it certainly ends up shaping the playoff picture as a result. There have only been two teams from the Pac-12 to ever appear in an FBS Playoff game, and neither of them had the juice to go on and win a title.
That rules out USC for me, and I think Ohio State will not be the force they have been in recent years either. The obvious rivalry with Michigan has shifted flags, and after the Buckeyes carried their dominance over Michigan for years, the Wolverines will be winning their division and representing the Big Ten East in the Conference title game again.
After winning the division title, the Wolverines will go on to win the Big Ten Conference Championship, and then it will be on to the FBS Playoffs. Another trophy will come when Michigan wins the semifinal bowl game, and then the real hardware will be lifted in the final game. That will put 4 accomplishments in the books for 2023 which will fill the school showcase nicely for years to come!
Georgia and Alabama are once again favoured as the top-2 programs to win this year’s title, but I have zero faith in either of those teams headed into a new campaign. Alabama is trying to roll out a Notre Dame transfer at QB who has limited experience at all, much less SEC experience. Georgia is in the same boat having to adjust to a new QB calling the shots, so I don’t believe a dime should be spent on either of those two programs to even reach the FBS Playoffs, much less win a title in 2023.
Ohio State and Michigan are neck-and-neck in the table to win the NCAA Football National Championship, and USC is right in that mix of top-5 pre-season odds.
- Georgia Bulldogs 3.40
- Alabama Crimson Tide 6.25
- Ohio State Buckeyes 9.50
- Michigan Wolverines 10.60
- USC Trojans 11.70
