Miami Dolphins vs Carolina Panthers Same-Game Parlay: Mike McDaniel’s Miami Maulers
Raheem Mostert 50+ Rushing Yards
The Miami Dolphins ran for 222 yards and Tua Tagovailoa threw for 308 yards on the way to a 31-16 route of the New York Giants last Sunday, and the scoreline could have been higher if they hadn’t gotten in their own way.
Three turnovers – including a 102-yard pick-six, the 7th longest of all-time – were a small blight on what was otherwise an extremely comfortable victory for Mike McDaniel’s side, and now they face an even weaker opponent in Frank Reich’s Panthers.
If ever there was a situation that a first-overall pick wouldn’t want to be drafted into, Carolina have crafted that environment for Bryce Young. A woeful defence? Tick. A dreadful offensive line? Tick. A running back that can’t move the chains? Tick. Trading away their best wideout to leave him with a USFL-level receiving core? Tick.
The Panthers were handed their fifth defeat of the season by a rampant Lions side in Week 5, allowing 161 yards at 6.2 yards per carry to Detroit’s running backs in a 42-24 hammering at Ford Field. It took their season tally to 840 rushing yards allowed to RBs – the 3rd highest mark in the league – and now they face the league leaders for total rushing yards, albeit without their leading rusher.
De’Von Achane’s IR designation following the injury he sustained against the Giants would have the potential to derail the offence of any other team, not Miami though. While the rookie has been a revelation – he leads all Dolphins RBs with 460 yards on just 38 carries (12.1 yards per attempt) – they have more than enough with Raheem Mostert, and potentially the returning Jeff Wilson Jr.
Mostert himself is going at an impressive 5.4 yards per tick this year, the highest mark of his career since 2019 (min. 50 carries), and his hit 50 rushing yards in 10 of the 13 starts he’s made for Miami in which he’s managed 10 or more carries – managing 49 in one of the three games he failed to reach 50.
Given he’s likely to get RB1 workload this week against a weak Carolina unit, 10 carries should be enough for him to reach that half-century milestone – and the opponent is a huge factor here.
Of the five leading backs to face the Panthers – four of them have reached 75 yards, with three of those reaching 95 yards and eight different running backs averaging more than five yards per carry. Given the home side are two-score favourites, the game script should mean Mostert gets plenty of carries too.
Miami Dolphins Over 1.5 Rushing Touchdowns
Not only does Carolina’s run defence take a battering in terms of yards, but it’s also the worst unit in the league when it comes to preventing rushing touchdowns.
The Panthers are allowing a league-high 1.8 rushing TDs per game, which rises to 2.3 in road games, and have allowed at least two scores on the ground in four of their five games.
Miami, meanwhile, boasts the league’s best offence when it comes to running it into the endzone – averaging 2.4 rushing scores per game, which rises to an almost unfathomable 3.5 per game at Hard Rock Stadium – managing the feat in four consecutive games.
Adam Thielen 6+ Receptions
Everything in Carolina is bad, except Bryce Young’s relationship with veteran wideout Adam Thielen. The former Viking has been about the only thing the quarterback has been able to trust in his rookie season, and he’s been force-feeding him targets to prove that.
Thielen’s 32 targets from the Alabama graduate, unsurprisingly, lead the team by a considerable margin and are 60% higher than Jonathan Mingo’s 20 targets in 2nd. He’s turning those targets into receptions, too.
#19 has seven or more receptions in four consecutive games and, given the likely game script for this one, is likely to be seeing a lot of the ball in this one too.
Miami has allowed the 9th most receptions to wide receivers in the league, and that’s because they’re often breaking off huge first half-leads and forcing opponents to play from behind. Carolina are 14-point underdogs in this one so expect that Bryce Young will be having to air the ball out a lot, and know that he’ll be looking for Adam Thielen when he does.
