Matthew O’Regan has readied his Newcastle vs Nottingham Forest prediction preview for one of the weekend’s biggest games. The sides lock horns again after The Toon Army ran out 1-3 winners at the City Ground in November.

Both sides come into this game off the back of away defeats, with Nottingham Forest losing 2-1 at Fulham, while Newcastle were dismantled 4-0 at Manchester City. The sides are separated by just six points as they both pursue European football, so a full blooded affair is expected at St. James Park.

Newcastle vs Nottingham Forest Prediction: Ice-cold Isak

England, Premier League, Sunday, February 23rd, 14:00 (UK)

A stellar unbeaten run that saw Newcastle storm up the league gave the Geordie faithful real hope of a top-four finish and a return to the Champions League. However, recent 1-4, 1-2 and 4-0 losses to Bournemouth, Fulham and Manchester City respectively have killed the momentum. Still, Eddie Howe’s side are in European contention, in the FA Cup fifth round and the Carabao Cup final, so will be satisfied with the season so far.

Their form at St James Park has been inconsistent, taking 20 points from 12, with their four league losses coming to Brighton, West Ham, Bournemouth and Fulham. Howe would be frustrated by the inconsistency as two wins against Arsenal, victory over Tottenham and Aston Villa and a draw against Liverpool have showcased how strong his side can be.

Nottingham Forest have shocked everyone with their performances this season as they sit third in the Premier League and in serious European contention. Nuno Espirito Santo has built a team with togetherness and spirit and is reaping the rewards. As is expected with a team punching above their weight in the league, their has been some signs of wobbling, losing 5-0 at Bournemouth and 2-1 at Fulham in the two recent away games. However, they bounced back from the Bournemouth drubbing by putting seven past Brighton, so Nuno will be hoping for a similar reaction on Sunday against Newcastle.

Key to Newcastle recent renaissance has been Alexander Isak. The Swede started the season slowly but has been in imperious form as of late. With 17 goals, only Chris Wood, Erling Haaland and Mo Salah have scored more goals than Isak. The 25-year-old has also scored twice in the Carabao Cup, taking his tally to 19 in all competitions.

Isak is averaging 0.81 goals per 90, from 3.09 shots and 1.52 shots on target per 90. At 2.30 odds, Newcastle’s talisman looks value in his pursuit of the golden boot.

Newcastle vs Nottingham Forest Injuries, Team News and Possible Lineups Prediction: Injury Woes behind both

Both sides, most notably Newcastle, have struggled with injuries this season but both Eddie Howe and Nuno Espirito Santo have a near clean bill to work with. Newcastle are still without Harvey Barnes and Jamaal Lascelles, while recent injuries to Joelinton and Sven Botman make the duo a doubt. With Forest’s running power, Howe may opt for Sean Longstaff over Joe Willock, while Tino Livramento is expected to displace Kieran Trippier at right back.

Danilo has returned from injuries in recent weeks, further bolstering Forest’s midfield options. Taiwo Awoniyi was injured against Exeter and looks to be the only absentee. In some of the tougher games, Nuno has opted for a back three-  a formation that proved fruitful against Brighton but struggled against Fulham.

Newcastle possible starting lineup:
Dubravka; Livramento, Schar, Burn, Hall; Longstaff, Tonali, Guimaraes; Gordon, Isak, Murphy

Nottingham Forest possible starting lineup:
Selz; Murillo, Milenkovic, Morato; Aina, Gibbs-White, Anderson, Williams; Hudson-Odoi, Wood, Elanga
