Venezuela vs Mexico Prediction 1: Mexico Have the Edge
South America, Copa America 2024, Thursday, June 27th, 02:00 (UK)
Venezuela came into the tournament on a poor run of form so you could have been forgiven for writing them off when they fell a goal behind in the 40th minute of their opening group game against Ecuador. They showed great spirit to come back and win 2-1 but in truth, their task was made far easier by Enner Valencia’s sending-off in the 22nd minute. The Venezuelans were able to control possession as a result and tired legs became an issue for Ecuador late on.
Mexico also enjoyed a winning start and we are backing them to build on that with another victory here. They were able to keep it tight as they edged past Jamaica 1-0. The Jamaicans finished the game with an xG of just 0.51 and they only muster up three attempts from inside the penalty area. Jamie Lozano’s men will be keen to pose more of a threat going forward here but the solid defensive display will please the manager.
El Tri beat Venezuela 2-1 when the teams last went toe-to-toe way back in 2019.

Venezuela vs Mexico Prediction 2: Attacks Will Have the Last Word
Despite Mexico’s solid defensive display in their last game, we are still siding with both teams to score here. Edson Alvarez was taken off with an injury that looks likely to keep him out of the rest of the tournament. The loss of the midfielder makes Mexico vulnerable in transition and this is something that Venezuela will hope to exploit.
The Venezuelans are scoring an average of 1.14 goals per game in their seven competitive matches since the start of 2023. They aren’t the most deadly going forward but the prize of qualification for the knockout stages should make the latter stages of this game a frantic affair.
Mexico also boasts a decent scoring record in their more recent competitive matches. They have played 14 since the start of 2023 and scored an average of 1.57 goals in those matches. They have conceded just 0.79 goals per game over that period but both teams have scored on the last two occasions that Mexico have faced Venezuela.

Venezuela vs Mexico Prediction 3: Gimenez Must Step Up
Santiago Gimenez leads the attacking line for Mexico and those who have seen him play for Feyenoord this season won’t be surprised to see him at the top end of the goalscorer markets for this one. The team finished 2nd in the Eredivisie, seven points behind PSV but that wasn’t down to a lack of goals.
Gimenez scored 23 league goals in 30 appearances. He became just the third-ever Mexican player to score 20 or more goals in his first season playing in Europe. Javier Hernandez and Luis Garcia are the only other players to accomplish that feat. He also managed to score two goals in four Champions League appearances.
Arne Slot had initially used Gimenez from the bench at Feyenoord but he made that starting spot his own come the turn of the year. The Mexican’s ability to take the chances that fall his way make him a key asset for his country. They are unlikely to create a wealth of chances here but Gimenez will be ready to pounce.
- Venezuela vs Mexico Prediction 3: Santiago Gimenez To Score
- Best Odds: 3.40
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 6/10

Venezuela vs Mexico Copa America 2024 Team News and Possible Lineups: Alvarez’s Absence is a Blow
Salomon Rondon is a player who will be familiar to Premier League fans. He has stints at West Brom, Newcastle and Everton before moving away from Europe. He leads the attack for Venezuela.
The injury to Edson Alvarez is a huge blow for Mexico but they still have several talented players in their ranks. The majority of their starting eleven from their first game play their football in Europe but there is no big star in the team. Santiago Gimenez appears to be the next poster boy but there is a long way to go.
Venezuela possible starting lineup:
Romo; Gonzalez, Ferraresi, Osorio, Navarro; Martinez, Herrera; Savarino, Casseres, Soteldo; Rondon
Mexico possible starting lineup:
Gonzalez; Sanchez, Montes, Vasquez, Arteaga; Romo, Chavez; Vega, Pineda, Quinones; Gimenez
