Malmo v Wolfsburg Prediction
Most of Malmo’s recent matches have been friendlies with the Swedish league set to start back up on March 1st. Before the first-leg match, the only competitive fixture Malmo have played in was an 8-0 Svenska Cupen win over Syrianska. Wolfsburg, meanwhile, are moving along nicely after winning three of their last four matches.
Malmo v Wolfsburg Recent Matchups
Before last Thursday’s match, the only previous fixture between the two clubs was a friendly match back in 2016. Wolfsburg won 1-0 and continued their 100% record against Malmo in the first leg. That 2-1 win will please manager Oliver Glasner, especially after the Swedish side took the lead.
Malmo v Wolfsburg Stats & Analysis
It promises to be a tough match for Wolfsburg. Malmo’s home record in the UEFA Europa League is very impressive with just one defeat in their last 16 matches. That was against the eventual winners of last season’s competition, Chelsea. But Malmo has picked up some pretty decent results in this run at home. They’ve secured wins over Dynamo Kyiv and Besiktas as well as draws against AZ Alkmaar and FC Copenhagen.
What’s most impressive about this recent home record is Malmo’s ability to keep goals out. It’s something that they’re used to doing in their domestic league but that extends to the often snow-covered Swedbank Stadion. They’ve kept an impressive eight clean sheets at home in that 16-match run and the only time they’ve conceded more than two was during that 4-3 win over Dynamo Kyiv last November.
But Wolfsburg will be quietly confident about their chances – not least because of that slender lead they’ll take into the match. No, Wolfsburg have an impressive away record of their own in this competition with no defeats in their last eight away Europa League fixtures. In that run, they’ve travelled to clubs like Inter Milan and Lille and walked away with the win.
The only issue is that this impressive away form hasn’t extended over to the Bundesliga. They’ve lost three of their last five away matches in the league and will need to get things right if they are to progress to the next stage of the competition.
Malmo v Wolfsburg Bets
Wolfsburg are the slight favourites to secure the win in 90 minutes in this match. The Bundesliga side are 7/5 to win the match with the hosts Malmo out at 11/5. You’ll get a draw at 5/2 for this fixture that is delicately balanced after a tight first leg.
As previously mentioned, Malmo takes pride in their home record in this competition. A 1-0 win will see them progress to the next stage of the competition and you’ll get odds of 9/1 for just that. But if Malmo takes the lead then the onus will be on the visitors to push forward and try to grab a goal. That will open things up for Malmo to counter-attack and potentially grab a killer second goal. The Swedish side to win the match to nil is 9/3.
But this could be a cagey match. It wouldn’t be a surprise if there are just a few goals or fewer with this one so finely balanced at 1-2. Under 2.5 goals is 5/6 and under 1.5 is 5/2 if you fancy just a single goal or a 0-0 draw in this match. A goalless second leg would suit Wolfsburg just fine.
But that would be most unusual if recent results are anything to go by. Malmo have scored in each of their last 12 home matches in the Europa League so we can expect them to do so yet again. Both teams to score is 4/5 and that may well be the likeliest outcome here.
