Matthew O’Regan has his Liverpool vs Newcastle prediction preview as the sides meet in the Carabao Cup final. Newcastle are 17 games without a win against Liverpool so are up against it from the start. Eddie Howe’s side must overcome the runaway Premier League leaders if they are to win their first major domestic trophy since 1955. They are priced as big underdogs for this game and could be up against it.

Liverpool vs Newcastle Prediction

England, Carabao Cup, Sunday, March 16th, 16:30 (UK)

These sides meet for the third time this season, this time under the famous Wembley arches. The meeting in December at St. James Park ended 3-3 in a dramatic game, while Liverpool ran out comfortable 2-0 winners at Anfield in February.

With the Premier League all but wrapped up for Liverpool and no Champions League to play for, Arne Slot will be determined to win his first trophy as Reds manager on Sunday. The Reds were disappointing over two legs in defeat to PSG, eventually losing on penalties after two exhausting games. How much of an effect extra time and penalty shoot-out will have on Liverpool remains to be seen, but Slot may be left to rue his lack of rotation- particularly in the 3-1 win over Southampton.

The Reds have still lost just three times this season, coming against PSG, Plymouth and Nottingham Forest. Arne Slot’s hesitance to rotate may be down to inadequate depth, as shown by the defeat to Plymouth, so he will be delighted at the upcoming international break.

Newcastle are still in contention for a top five finish after a 0-1 win at West Ham, although their hopes of an FA Cup triumph were dashed after losing 1-2 to Brighton in a feisty affair at St. James Park. Anthony Gordon was shown a straight red from Anthony Taylor in this match, so will miss the final through suspension.

Lewis Hall has been stand out for the Toon Army since arriving from Chelsea but the 20-year-old is set to miss the rest of the season with injury, so Kieran Trippier is likely to play left back. While the 34-year-old has been a reliable full back and has looked good since coming back to the side, his best years are behind him and he may struggle against Mo Salah.

The Egyptian is having an unprecedented season and has 32 goals and 22 assists in 42 games this season. In the Premier League, he is averaging 0.94 goals, 3.71 shots and 1.92 shots on target per 90. He also enjoys playing against Newcastle, scoring four in his last three.

With Liverpool looking dead on their feet at full time against PSG, Salah may need to carry his side once more.

Liverpool vs Newcastle Injuries, Team News and Possible Lineups Prediction: Scousers Out

The main absentees look to be Trent Alexander Arnold and Anthony Gordon, with Trent injured against PSG and Gordon is suspended after being sent off against Brighton. With Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez also injured, it means Jarrell Quansah should fill in at right back.

Newcastle are weaker in defence, with Sven Botman and Lewis Hall expected to be out for the rest of the season. The main decision for Eddie Howe to make is whether to start Nick Pope or Martin Dubravka between the sticks.

Liverpool possible starting lineup:
Allison; Quansah, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Mac Allister, Gravenberch, Szoboszlai; Salah, Jota, Diaz

Newcastle possible starting lineup:
Pope; Livramento, Schar, Burn, Trippier; Joelinton, Guimaraes, Tonali; Murphy, Isak, Barnes
